Our little baby is growing. She is so much fun. Getting a little better about nibbling or should I say biting. We gently push her nose away and tell her no. But when she puts those ears back and takes off you better watch for the heels. She loves to chase the dog and the dog has learned to make quick turns to throw her off. Flossy is pretty fast. Wish I could figure out how to most a video of her running. Got her little hooves trimmed yesterday for the first time. Of course had to be held down. Something else she will have to learn. We try to pick up her feet frequently to get her used to it. But she is just a baby yet, still nursing. 

  

The Train

I stand on the tracks, looking into the darkness. Then I feel it coming. I can feel the vibration of the steel on the tracks and now I hear the sound. I can see the light flashing with warning and danger that is coming straight at me. I stand on the tracks paralyzed, my heart starts to pound faster and I cannot move. At last the train is upon me and still I can not move and it steams right over me. I throw back the covers to release the heat. That is what a hot flash is like to me.

I have just started on the bio-identical hormone touted by Suzanne Summers. They are compounded by the pharmacy with specific doses of 4 different hormones. Each can be adjusted to meet individual needs. Well I have tried everything else so why not.

my S#*t Cactus

 
 
This is a cactus that a friend in Nv. gave me a start of a year or so ago. She called it a s#*t cactus, because when it blooms the bloom really smells bad. Well now I can vouch for that. It took a couple weeks to form the bloom, the pod was about the size of a grapefruit. As you can see from the ruler I placed by the bloom it is at least 12 in. across. Really quite pretty and has a rubbery texture. Don't know how long it will last. Smelled worse the first day. Moved it to an out of the way place. Haven't checked to see if it still smells so bad. Would like to move it back to the living room. Anyone know what kind of plant this is? I just liked the unusual way it grows. But the blooms are something else, sort of alien!!

I find it a wonderful place to go to read stuff that makes me feel good as a human being, and feel that there is hope for the human race. I got to meet Deepak Chopra in person at the prison where I used to work. He had been doing a lecture in Reno and our Dr. at the prison talked him into doing a mini workshop for the inmates. Of course I attended and really enjoyed it. I especially liked his theory that we are really all one. He said that as we live and breath we give off many cells a day and as we breath in we are actually breathing in "other people" and makeing their cells a part of us. Thus making us all really one. He did a demonstration on meditation. I have several of his books and now want to go back and re read them. So if anyone reads this and has time, go to his site, there are many links that can keep a person busy for days. Maybe it will help us understand a little of what life is really about and why we are here in the first place.

Where do bad chickens go?

 
Rocky has been a baaaaaaaaaad boy!! So he is locked up in chicken jail for now. We have Rocky and 7 hens and 1 lonesome guiney {name is Guiney Gumbo}. Gumbo has attached herself to the chickens and they have all gotten alone OK. That is till yesterday. Rocky started chasing Gumbo. Then it got to be mean, with Rocky hanging onto Gumbo and dragging her down till they were both exhausted. So the sherif,{that would be my hubby} came along and arrested Rocky and now he is in jail. Any one want a real pretty ornry rooster???

From left to right. Millie {who is most likely with child}, Hubby,{he is easy to spot huh?}, baby girl Flossy, her Mom Jennie. You can only see a tiny part of the horse's head, but will post on him seperately. They are so gentle and the dog was accepted with not problem. We were afraid that her being a strange dog they would run her out, but they let her walk around their feet, even the horse. And the chickens are in heaven as they mill around picking up any feed they drop. They had been on a pretty much dry lot, I mean dust dry, and eating grain and hay. They hardlly lifted their noses from the grass all day. Flossy was so funny learning how to eat grass. Her first efforts was to pull straight back on a piece of grass till it snapped off. After one day she has learned to crop it off with her little teeth. Oh, and little teeth, the gal who raised her was letting her suck on her fingers, thinking it was cute. NOT. So we are gently letting her know that teeth on people is a no no. We don't want a biter. Well enough for now. Just had to share this with the world.

They call it being innovative now

I was painting the inside of the back door of the store this morning and had a little flash back. You see I was painting this pretty lavender. Radiant Orchid to be exact. When my daughter was about 4 we had moved into a trailer that had 3 bedrooms. But they were very small bedrooms. So son and daughter each had a room that was only big enough for a single bed. There were dressers and closet built in. Well being creative that I am (clears throat), I went to a used,.... well heck it was a junk yard to be sure. I bought this old fashioned baby bed, all metal. The old gentleman on the farm where we were living helped me to lower the springs down to the lowest setting and get rid of the rails. Walla, a small single bed. I painted the bed Radiant Orchid, and did the dresser drawers in same color with a splash of pink if I remember correctly. She slept in this "baby bed" till she was to long for it, but it gave her a couple extra feet of floor space to play. Sons room got a similar treatment with a shade of green, but he was older and had a single bed.
Lets see the alarm clock story will have to be a later time.

Is anyone there?

I know the blog is just for me to blather on and on with my own thoughts to entertain myself, but since I get no comments from anyone any more I can't help but wonder if any one is out there. Gee if I thought no one was reading this I might just tell some really juicy stuff.

Getting our babies home this weekend so will be posting alot of donkey pictures I am sure. Business has been better this week, so glad of that. Have taken in alot of books on trade this week also.

Oh, and gas is down to 1.96$ now. Wow.

TV, whats on?

After working evening shift for a couple years, I sort of got out of the habit of watching TV. Still don't like to just sit and watch it. But we got hooked on Dancing With The Stars and haven't missed any. And I started out with the first nite of a little Fri. nite sitcom. Men In Trees. It is a hoot and I don't want to miss any shows now. If you haven't watched it, I recommend it. City girl goes to Alaska. So thats my thought for today.

Gas is 1.99$

Well aren't we just all happy now about the lower price of gas? Remember when it hit 2.00$ and we were outraged?? To be honest I didn't think it would come back down to this. Is this just the lull to tease us? Could it be connected to the elections? You think?

Business seems slow, but talked to another store owner in town and they said that everyone in town was feeling a slow time. So at least I felt better to know that maybe it wasn't just me. Think it will pick up with fall and then winter. Just hang in there is all I can do.

Capenter came back after 2 weeks vacation and is ready to finish up work on the farm. Yea, now maybe we can get going on the bathroom soon. He is so slow we are worried about how long we might be without a bathtub!! Slow but good.

 
  

Elvis lives at Branson

I will attach a picture of the new downtown area of Branson, called The Landing. Lots of new shops right on the lake with an ongoing water show set to music. No autos allowed, have to walk from a large parking lot at each end or catch a ride on a special open bus that drives up and down to help folks get about. Elvis was giving a free show. This was the skinney one! Had a great voice.

Had a great weekend in Branson. Enjoyed the show at Dixie Stampede. All the horses and flags and buffalo made for a great show just a few feet from our seat. Was a very nice get away. Won some free show tickets so will be going back in Oct for just a one nite. About 1 1/2 hr away so thats not bad. Bye for now.

  

Branson Get Away!!!

Headed out today for Branson. Looking forward for a weekend get-a-way. Be back Mon afternoon. Going to be staying at our timeshare in Branson and have tickets for Dolly Pardons Dixieland Stampede. Will be fun to just relax. Want to spend Sun browsing around downtown Branson. I saw in the paper where they had build a huge addition the last couple years, called The Landing. They have the biggest Bass Pro Shop there on the lake and lots of new shops and resturants and a light/water show. so am taking walking shoes and a couple bucks, just in case. Got bro. lined up to stay at our place for a couple nites to house sit and take care of the pooch. Sort of payback for the dog sitting I did for him last month. Still working on getting the computer back up to snuff. Can't find the disc for the printer so was in the process of downloading the program from HP and saw it was going to take to long to download to do it today, so canceled that for now. Will try again Tue, when I am back to work.
Did I say work? ha ha, I hardly feel like it is work, I just love having my own store and visiting with people. I really didn't think I would like that part that much. I am really not the gossipy kind. Hubby is more the one who know everyone and their kin and what they ate for dinner.

We were scrambling to get hay loaded Thurs pm. as the baler had trouble with his equip. and took forever to get the hay baled. Then it was trying to start raining. We got 2 loads into the barn with our little pickup and was waiting for the guy who was taking 1/2 of the hay to show up with a couple strong boys and a flatbed trailer. All of a sudden the neighbor gal and her friend were in the field picking up hay! What great neighbors we have. She has volunteered to go down and haul our horse and donkeys home for us next Sun. Well off to fun city. Everyone have a good weekend. dc

My Malfunction!!

Well I got initiated big time, at least I think so. About 3 weeks ago I got a virus in my computer for the first time. With help from a "friend" we downloaded an anti-virus program and it seems OK. but there were functions I could not do, like post pictures on my blog and couldn't get a screen saver to go up and a couple other little things. So we tried to do a restore that would not destroy everything in my computer and it would not do it. So I down loaded everything I could think of to make back up info and we did the major restore. Well now it is like I have this new computer straight from the factory without any of my programs or info on it. Gradually I am getting things added to it. Need to do an update from Microsoft to get me back up to the stuff I had on it. I will be more careful in my surfing and now I have the anti virus on board. You know you don't think you need something till something happens. Well I am partially blonde. Will try to send some pictures tomorrow but need to load my camera software yet. Got pictures of my new baby, Flossy to show everyone who cares. She is adorable!!!

Love at first site

Wow, what a weekend. Did the Fall Festival Sat. I think it was very successful. I gave out 95 1$ coupons plus I know I talked to some folks that didn't take a coupon for what ever reason. Even sold a few books, but that wasn't the main reason for being there. Had some family stop by and check things out. Husb did the cake walk and brought home a delicious cho. cake with cho. frosting that was like fudge. Yummy. Had a beautiful day for the event. oh, and I won a small vinyl window for 2$ that I put in the silent auction. Then Sun it rained cats and dogs. We got over 4 1/2 inches. Had the KC sis and her hubby come out for breakfast on their way back home. Helped hubby put up shelves in garage.

On Mon. went to LOOK at some burros that we saw advertized in the paper, about 1 hr. away. Well we fell in love. Of course we bought them. 2 Jennies, one named Jenny who has a 3 week old baby girl that we named Flossy, then the other one is also a daughter of Jenny, a 12 year old {who just happens to [maybe] be carrying a foal} we changed her name from Molly to Milly, as we have a dog named Molly and would be to confusing, esp for the dog as she is very tuned into her name. So we are so excited. While we were there hubby made good friends with one of the horses they had to sell. a 5 year old quarter horse, he is just a doll. Very gentle and he really liked my hubby. Well you guessed it, we now have a horse too. Well we won't have to mow the small pasture next to the house anymore. Having the hay field bailed again as soon as this next rain goes thru, so will be saving all of this cutting. Well got to go finish scraping donkey poo off my shoes!!

Is Fall very far away?

I saw my first hedge apple on the road near my home this morning. There is a stretch of road that the trees over hang the road and meet in the middle. Sort of like driving under a canopy. But always hope that the big green hedge apples do not fall when you drive by. Also the walnuts fall pretty thick thru there, so that means the red squirrels are busy.

I like to go out early in the morning and just survey the kingdom. I saw the cutest thing yesterday morning. There was a fairly heavy fog in the valley and heavy dew on everything. This pretty little goldfinch was sipping dew off of the curved leaves of the little peach tree. He was standing on the top branch and he would reach down and scoop up the dew from each leaf around him.

Wish I could remember when you are supposed to stop feeding the humming birds. Anyone know? I know you need to stop or they will stay here to long and then not make it all the way to So. America or where ever it is they go. Someone told me recently that humming birds hitch rides on the geese that go south. I had never heard that and am not sure whether or not to believe it or not. Miss gullable here!!

Has anyone had to run the restore on their computer? Having trouble with my computer, Think I got a virus hit while I was blog surfing a couple weeks ago, Had someone help walk me thru installing an anti spy program and seemed to stop alot of the immediate problems, but still can't post pictures to my blog and can't get my desktop to put picture back up. I am trying to backup all my info onto discs, but having trouble figuring out how to download all the e-mail files I have created. Hate to take the chance of just loosing everything.

Had a wonderful surprise yesterday. My door opened with the little bell ringing to announce a customer. Standing there was a very good friend of mine from Nv. Actually she has been living in Arizona then Ca. the last 15 years, so I have only seen her on short visits when she would come to Nv. to see her son. She had been my boss at one time and my college instructor later on. What a treat!! They had been in Ia. for her husb. class reunion and are retired and traveling so planned this little town in their route.

Tomorrow I am closing the store for a day. Going to take the show on the road. There is a fall festival at a near by little town. So am setting up a booth and hand out coupons and info on the store. I might sell a few books but main goal is just to put my face and name out there so folks will know I am here. Well got to go work on my poster and start boxing up the books I want to take with me. WOW! 2.19$

Maybe they will start paying us to use up all the stored gas they have!!Gas hasn't been that low here for over a year. We are very glad, of course we don't have any travel plans and only live 3 miles from the store.

Do have a little weekend get away planned for the weekend of the 23rd. Going to spend a couple nites at our time share in Branson and take in a show. Got tickets to Dolly Pardon's Dixieland Stampede, for Sat nite and then will spend Sun. checking out the huge new development that we haven't seen yet. It is called The Landing. A huge Bass Pro Shop on the lake plus a lot of shops and resturants built up in the area with a light and water show in the evening. So will take walking shoes and plan to just relax and have a good time. Bro. will stay at the house for us those nites to keep the dog company. Thats his payback for me dog sitting with his dog while he was gone for a week. Only thing my dog isn't so cooperative. If he just goes out to let her out, she gets in her chair and just ignores him till he leaves. We hope that with him staying all nite and cooking dinner there she will relax and cooperate. Other wise I told her it will be the kennel for her next time. And I mean that, I really do, yes I really do.

odds and ends

Wow, gas is down to 2.23$ in our fair little town. Remember when it went over 2.00$ and we had a fit. The highest it got here was 2.98$ I believe.

Trash on the roadway! Makes me so mad when I drive along and see all the cups and cans throwed out on the roads. Do people think the world is their trash can? I just want to get in someones face and make them take a mile section of the road and clean it up. We have a guy who makes his living or suppliments it by riding around on a bike with a trash sack and picks up cans along the roads. Good for him. I am tempted to tell him to check behind my store and I will start putting my cans in a box for him.

My carpenter is on vacation this week. Work has been slow on the breezeway, as he only works part of the day and some days has to take his mom to the Dr. I am excited about how it is shaping up. We tore down the old BBQ storage area and power washed the wall and deck. Love that new little electric power washer. We picked up the new ceiling fan and light for him to install next over the deck. Have decided to get a patio door for him to install where a dining room window looks out onto the deck. That will be so nice to have the extra door..

Getting my face out to the public. Planning to set up a table next Sat at the Fall Festival being held at a little neighboring town. I made up some dollor coupons to give out. Will set up a table with books and pamplets and a BIG sign to advertize the store. Looking forward to doing this. Business has been slow this past week. But the week before was my best week so far, so you just can't tell. I get to pay my first sales tax the end of this month.

Well thats it for my thoughts. Having trouble with my computer, it won't let me transfer pictures to my blog site to post. Darn I like to attach pictures and have several I want to share.

Isn't this the real truth? We always are looking ahead to something else/more, and real life is the everyday stuff. So guess we need to slow down and smell the roses, don't take everything so serious. Another quote I like is "don't sweat the small stuff, everything is small stuff" Just my thoughts for today.

What is the book store owner reading?

Now that I have access to thousands of my own books, what am I reading? I have to laugh because my personal stash on top of my computer desk is getting bigger and bigger. I try to recommend authors to customers and they like to tell me what they like and what book is a good read. I just finished 2 of Nicolas Sparks books, If you haven't read him, please indulge. He writes wonderful love stories. Nights in Rodanthe, was wonderful. Then I just finished, The Wedding. Oh, to have someone love you like in these books would be awsome! So I am changing types and reading a Louis L'Amour book. Have never read him and thought he was just a western writer. A customer suggested this one and I find it really a great read. It is The Haunted Mesa. I keep one book at the store and one at home to read. At home is a Sandra Brown book about a couple traveling by covered wagon from Kentucky to Texas to homestead. Of course her books are full of very sensual stuff. Just hadn't read any of her stuff for alot of years. My stack that is on my desk here at the store is: Border Music, by Robert James Waller who wrode The Bridges of Madison County, Texasville, by Larry McMurtry, Lori, by Robert Bloch, looks like a psycho supernatural thriller, then I want to read The Horse Whisperer, A customer told me the book does not follow the same line as the movie and has a completely different ending. So I have alot to read plus I have at least 10 more set aside. tee hee. This is really a hard job. I have been thrilled with the response of the community, Almost everyone who comes in says they are so glad to have a book store here in town and like the way I have it set up. Sort of bright and homey at the same time. I am getting return customers and am glad to see that. I will just hang in there, somedays I only have a couple customers in and others I have up to 10 or more. I think when it gets cooler and people have to stay in more it will pick up more. Going to run some advertizing in a couple papers this next week. Well back to Louis L'

Construction ongoing

New breezeway between house and garage. Also new roofing thru out. Think we will really like this. Can't see the deck under the roof from this picture. Will hang a fan and light from the rafter. It is all cedar beams and open inside. Still under construction under the roof. The edge of the roof is cut off and the siding on the outside wall is run up to the new roof to enclose the open ends back up under the ends. Will attach another picture and you can see the studs that are up so far and see what I mean. Will post more pictures when wall is done. The little "building" on the deck is for the BBQ grill and will come off and the whole repainted to match the new part.

Lights on, anyone home?

Do you ever notice that you can walk around all the rooms of your home in the middle of the nite and not have to turn on a single light? There are little red glowing lights everywhere, so I thought I would list all the ones I have, anyone got more? Lets see, in the kitchen, there is the clock on the stove and microwave, thats 2. bathroom, a light switch has that little glow light, 3. Bedroom, satelite base has a glow, protable phone base glows, bedside clock glows, thats 6. Living room, one clock, phone base, elect spike protector, cell phone on charge, thats 10. Other bedroom, another spike protector, laptop light come off and on, one more clock, thats 13. Geez its any wonder we can sleep with all this light in the house!! Guess that is why the little night light is in a drawer somewhere. Oh, and I didn't mention the BIG light, the security light in the driveway, so the bugglers can see better. teehee.. Does that make 14?

LOST?

Is it just human nature for us to always think the darkest thought when we worry about a loved one? Absence does NOT make the heart grow fonder. Who ever made that one up is full of crap. Absence only makes the little dark thoughts grow and feed on each other and the imagination goes places that may not be necessary. And even if the dark thoughts turn out to be true, what is worse, knowing the truth or thinking these thoughts?

Little hoofbeats on my heart, or is it my thigh?

This is the hoof print left by a momma jenny. That would be a burro. Our neighbor has a new baby and we went to look at her. "they never kick" except when I turned to look at the jack who was braying at the new mom and she turned and kicked toward the jack and I was in the way. Glad it was my big old thigh and not my face or kneecap. I will add a picture of the new baby too. They are so sweet. We plan on getting a couple. Baby's name is Daisy and Mom is Blossom. They have a 3 month old baby named Rosebud. They are very friendly. Just that the new mom was just not ready to be listening to the jack yet, and was being a little protective of new babe.

Narrow Minds? Mine or theirs?

Had a couple ladies in the store today, only wanted to look at Christian historical romance. well now that narrows it down. I had some that were called "Love Inspired", that should have qualified, but not enough on the historical side. Had a sack of books to trade in, but ended up deciding to keep them and bought several childrens books instead. Not sure why they didn't want to use the books they brought in toward credit to buy books, but that was their choice. They left with their noses high and long skirts hanging. Oops did I say that?

Just a little piece of heaven

I still have to pinch myself when I pull in the gate to our place. Can't believe we were able to buy our little farm back after 10 years. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't go home. Everything we do now is for keeps on this place. Have a carpenter working now building a breeze way between the house and garage, and it will cover the deck too. That will make the deck so much more accessable. It will be open to the so. and no. so will still get a nice breeze thru it. My bro. says it should look like a picnic shelter! Well thanks alot. Doing it in cedar, having the house and garage reroofed at the same time. Think I will add one more picture of my hummers. I have 2 feeders, actually the one in the pic is an oreole feeder but the hummers don't care. I have to fill them every morning as they empty them daily. Hubby will be home Sun. Gosh I almost got used to him being gone, almost 4 weeks, will have to get adjusted to having someone else in the house. But he can sure take over the lawn mowing again, thats for sure. It will be good to have him home safe and sound. This is a crazy world we live in and we need to appriciate every day. Oh, the store is doing OK. Been so hot, that I think alot of people are just staying in where its cool. I let a guy bring his big dog in the other day. He pulled up right in front and had a big, overweight, golden lab hanging out the window. I said, why don't you bring the dog in, and he was so glad, said she was a good girl and she was. The other local little county paper had a little write up this week on me. The lady mayor has a collumn that she writes and I went to her last week and thanked her for sending a customer to me and she said, well I think I need to make mention of your store in the paper, and she did. Hey I will take all the free advertizement I can get. Had the young guy back today to go thru my old classic books and found some Steinbecks. So there is something for everyone. Did my biggest sale this morning. An older lady bought 45$ of western romance, and that was after her trade in of 16$ worth of books that I gave her credit for. This is so much fun!! Oh, went to Ark. on my days off to visit grand daughters and 3 managed to get smuggled back to the farm to stay all night, I was afraid they would start thinking they were to old for that. The oldest one is 17 and she even opted to come stay with Grandma over spending time with boyfriend who had a day off on Mon. Yea, here's to grandma power. Actually she was the one who begged to come. We had a great time, made bacon, tomatoe, sandwiches, and played scrabble till 11;00. Ok I am done now. dc

1: I hate to have anything wooden on my tongue, like popsicle sticks or wooden spoons. Have to turn my head if I let the dog lick the popsicle stick. Sort of like running your nails down a blackboard.

2. I had and eyelid lift and tummy tuck with in one year. That would be a little over 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself.

3. I walk around doing other things while brushing my teeth, sometimes things like getting into the shower or getting dressed.

4. I tend to be gullible, is that spelled right? I seem to always believe what ever people tell me.
There were some whoppers I was told as a kid that I found out later were not true. I still have a hard time sorting out the "whoppers".

Thats what a young man told me yesterday when he went thru my collection of old classic books. He ended up buying about 10 of them. Who knew? This is just turning out to be tooooo much fun. Had a very good day yesterday and a very slow day on Wed. This morning had a gal waiting on the doorstep for me to open. So maybe it will be a good day. Heck everyday is a good day!! Did anyone see the story on Good Morning America this week about the Indigo Children. I found it facinating and went to the net to check out and found a great site that has lots of links for even more info. Check out this http://skepdic.com/indigo.html It mentions a book called The Indigo Children by Lee Carroll that was directed by his channeler named Kryon. Looks like some real interesting stuff. Well you can see where I spend my time when things are slow? Looks like I may have a very interesting weekend, having a visitor to spend the weekend that I haven't seen in 10 years. Business is booming, well maybe

It is 10:00 Fri AM and have 2 customers already!! Coffee is brewing, Ray Lynch playing mellow music on the computer, life is good. Only had one customer all day yesterday, First couple days open had several lookers and made a couple sales each day. Not worried, still trying to alpha everything. Working on the science fiction now. Did the westerns yesterday, seem to be alot of western readers here, I didn't think I needed to alpha them till the very first guy that came in looking for one special author made me realize that everything has to be in alpha order. Keeping busy at home with hubby out of town. Lawn needs mowing, to cool off this weekend so that will be good. We have 5 little banty chickens now, about half grown, the rooster just started crowing last week. Have to compete with them for the tomatoes, but guess they can eat a few. They sure run around picking up bugs, Saw a pair of groundhogs in the pasture next to the house so the shotgun is sitting handy. Don't want them up in the yard, They dig such huge holes where ever they decide to. Sorry to all the groundhog lovers, The world will have to do without a few if they are on our place. Well got to go read the local paper, should take about 5 min. My article should come out next Tue. Will copy and post it here. dc

Open for business

Well I am ready, I already drug in the first customer who saw me putting up my open sign and he was at the garage next door, so he came in and checked out my policy plan, was friendly and left. So its OK, I didn't expect to have them lined up today. Took some pictures, as you can see the shelves have some bare spots so in a few days I will go back to the books I culled out and stored and bring some more in. Actually I like it not so crowded and it gives me room to put up books that I take in. So will have to wait and see how it goes. Wish me luck, Addict, I may take a nap on the floor after awhile.

Opening the 17th, for sure, for sure!

I really mean it this time. And I will be ready, still getting the books alpha, by author now. And have some of the old wooden floor left to scrub and wax. It is the orig. bar floor, was able to save about half of the flooring. Got the blinds and curtains and adding a couple plants and pictures. Sort of like nesting. Hubby will leave Tue to deliver his sis back to Nv. What a time to be traveling across the deserts. Guess I never mentioned we got a new vehicle just before we moved. It is a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Bright blue with white top. Really cool looking. We get lots of comments by folks when we travel. Some even ask to sit in it. So he is driving it and they are sending her car by a car carrier, which is being picked up today. She has an 89 Crown Victoria that has less than 30,000 miles on it and still looks new. Well got to get to this floor. Hot here. Love the air conditioner. dc

My new life in books,

Here is a peak of what things are looking like. Don't you love my shopping cart. Went to Dollar General Store and asked if I could buy one of their old carts out back and I got it for 5$ A little spray paint and it works wonderful. I am using bird houses for my decorations. Will put a bird nest in the chinmey hole. The curtains have birdhouses on them. Still need to put up the miniblinds and curtains. Can't you see I am wired for this!!! An just so thrilled to have the opportunity to do this, and to think this will be my JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So OK you can't organize 10,000 books in a couple days. Who knew?
Actually there have been some serious stuff going on with this family, both sisters with major health issues and now a greatnephew is critically ill, so you know things sort of came into perspective for me today and I said to myself, "self, what are you knocking yourself out for?"
So it may take a few days longer. My bro and his girlfriend were just here and bless their hearts hauled all the "extra" books over to store in my sisters house. There was a whole pickup load. NOW I can see some progress and can start to get organized. I was feeling so swamped. I have thrown several hundred books in the dumpster and have a few boxes in the corner that will most likely end up the same way. Not going to store anymore. My gut feeling is that after I am open awhile and take in books for resale I will never open one of those boxes and they will go to the dump too. Hate to throw out books, but 25 John Gresham's The Firm is just to much!! And tons of the old romance novel, you know the kind, with the guy half dressed and muscles bulging and a damsel with her bosom hanging out and hair to her waist looking wistfully at him, half of them have Lust as part of the title. But I want bright newer books and when the shelves are full and I have room I will pull out some of them. Will be interesting to see what kind of books folks here read. Probably all the Lust for Life type, ha ha
Well headed home early, only about 6 pm. Oh, while I am writing a novel here I will add that hubby is headed back to Nv. in one week. His sis did not like Mo. and refuses to stay here and has bought another house in Nv. again to be back where she is familiar with things. Shelfish us, we thought she would be happy to just live near us. Hubby is the only family she has and she is 82, just can't see what this is going to do to my hubby, This is his only sister and only family left to him. So now he will have to make trips back and forth to check on her and over see her going to an assisted living one day when she can't live alone. Oh, don't get me started. On one hand I am so mad and on the other I can understand her. Well we all make choices in life and have to live with them. So thats my story for now. dc

Open July 11

Ever try to put 10,000 books in alphabetic order???? Help. But plan to open Tue. So will sleep here if I have to. Still haven't practiced with the cash register. Better do that by Mo. Have a gal at city hall who said she would help me. Well back to pricing and stacking. Will add pictures later of my cute counter, bro. helped me build and my small blue shopping cart I bought from Dollar General and painted, for $5.!!

Guess I should give you a before picture so you can see what the building looked like. This was taken about a month after I bought the building and had already had the new roof put on.
We litterly gutted the inside down to the studs and put in new wiring and plumbing. Thats why it has taken so long. dc

MY Store

Well here is the {almost} finished store. Still need the store sign to be put up and will do that today. About 3 more days building shelves. Then a few days putting books on them. Will be glad to have all the sawdust over with. But have loved every minute of this. Oh, also have a flower box to go out front tomorrow and have the flag mounted on the right corner. Will do another picture later plus some of the renovation in progress, and the finished product. That alley way beside the store, carries all the traffic from the bank drive thru that is on main street. I couldn't believe all the traffic that comes thru there. There is a parking lot just to the right of my little red truck and a small amount of parking in the front. Well got to go and get some paint slapped on some more shelving before my helper comes at noon and we can get some more shelves up. Lots of other personal news but will save that for later too. dc

Welcome to MO....

Well only 4 months off line!! Things do move slow here in Mo. LOL!
Got lots to share and pictures galore. But just a quick note to say I am back
Better than ever. Retirement is wonderful. Have never worked so hard in my life. lol.
But it has been a work of love, The store is about ready to be opened. Shooting for the 5th of July. Got to get back to the paint before my brush dries out. Oh, Meg the front door will be RED>>> Think you will like all my colors. Just got on line. So will sit down in the evening and send a big post with some pictures. Love to ya all. dc

MOVIN ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will be closing out our internet/cable service on Mon the 27th so time is short to leave my last blog for awhile. The town we are moving to has one of the few private phone companies and you have to use their internet service, so will be changing everything over in a couple weeks.

The time is flying by like a whirlwind. So much detail to attend to. Didn't seem this hard last time we moved. hmm, could it be we are 10 years older?

Did the garage sale thing Fri, got rained out today so will try again on Sun as it is to clear out. One minute is raining, then snow flurries, then the wind blowing real hard. So got alot of packing done today. It is coming together, but hard work. Picked up taxes today, Very good news, I was hoping for a nice refund since I had to pay last year.

So this is it from this end for awhile. I will look forward to checking in as soon as I get back on line. I will miss all my blogger buddies. After Tue, no more "working for the man". Oh, I will be the "man".... whoa, what a thought.

Retirement Party, who Me??

Well I guess I have to go thru with it and retire now, since they threw me a party tonite!!
Am adding a picture of the cake, A little play on my first name, like in the Wizard of Oz. If you click on the pic. you can read the card. On the inside it said "All you need is a pair of red slippers and a fiesty little dog" So they found the slippers and a little plastic dog to add to the cake, Cute.

My favorite card came from the Dr. that I have worked with for all this time, She is a real gem, she gave me a gift sack of wine, a book, bath salts, a bag of gold coins{candy} and a package of Henna Tattoo kit. Looks interesting. The front of her card is a beautiful red rose with lots of dew drops, on the front it says "QUALITY,
Countless, unseen details are often the only difference between mediocre and magnificent."
On the inside she wrote, " I will miss the fact that I'm losing one of my most pleasant, sane, and competent nurse. Then she quoted Eleonor Roosevelt:"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Pretty awsome huh? At the bottom she wrote"All my best wishes for your health, happiness, highpoints, humor, habitat, handicrafts, harvests, heathenism and all the other hot H's".

I still have to pinch myself to believe that I am really doing this. Where did this streak of adventure and no fear of the unknown come from. Where ever, I love it and embrace it and I am READY.

Just as it should be

I just love it when things fall into place, just as they should. Sister in law, accepted an offer on her house yesterday with closing the end of April. Which willl give us just enough time to get moved and hubby fly back and help her with her moving details. She will use a moving co. to do the major moving and hubby will drive her and her 2 pups back. She will take posession of her house in Mo. just before she gets moved in so I can see to getting the carpets cleaned and ready for her.

All is sailing along here, I am orienting my replacement, which is usually unheard of with a state job. So I am sort of laying back my last couple weeks and letting her do most of the work. Heck how else is she supposed to learn!! They are throwing a retirement party for me Sun afternoon. So that should be nice.

Still very cold here, and treats of more snow flurries, so we are waiting till the last week to do the moving sale. Wish us luck to have decent weather.

So that is my update. Getting all my addresses changed, Anyone who wants my new address and phone no. in Mo. can e-mail me and will pass it along.

Will of course have to change internet servers after Mar. 31 so I will notify folks of that. So its off to work, well sort of work, ha ha.

OH, don't think I mentioned I bought 6,000 books while in Mo. for 5 cents a book. A leap of faith as I only looked in a few boxes, but think it going to be OK> I got alot of painting done while there and the house cleaned, wood floors waxed and all the donated stuff cleared out. So it is ready to move into. Can't wait.

Baby its cold outside

Well dang, home one day and look what we got up to this morning. Those are quail swarming under the bird feeder. Taken from my kitchen window. more snow tonite too. And bro just told me it is 70 degrees back there in Mo. 3 more weeks and I am out of here for good. Yea for me.

Only in a small town

I am back in Mo. for a couple weeks, and only in a small town could you do some of the things I have done this week. Like go to the telephone co. and and they still had a card on me from when I lived there 9 years ago that so they did not need a letter of credit from my current phone co. I am talking about a little 3X5 card!! And when I went to post office all they needed was our name and the address on a little slip of paper to start mail delivery. I was thrilled the next day when I got junk mail in the mail box. I opened up our bank accounts and the bank president came out and gave me a big hug and wanted to know how soon we would be moved there permanently. So small town is good. Of course the internet service sucks. This little town has one of the few local phone companies, family owned and they have the only phone service so the internet service is thru them or you don't have one. So much for getting a good deal. But won't complain. At least they have it, right? So I am on my daughters computer in Ar. Having a great get together with her and her best friend. What a pair. So had to check up on everyone and say hi. Got to head back to the farm tomorrow and get busy with the paint brush, and go shopping for doors and windows for the store. Oh, also found someone who wants to sell me 6,000 books. How about that, when I talked to him he said alot of them are brand new and can buy them for 5 cents a book. Well thats it for now. Won't be home till the 8th of Mar. Then serious packing and will be moving back here on the 1st of April. dc

1973-74

As I look at retiring from 33 years of nursing I wanted to reflect back on how I got into nursing and what that 1st year of training was like. Back in 1971-72 I was working in a little boarding home. I worked some nites and some pm's. Mostly I was an attendant as this was not a nursing home and I cooked meals and was sort of the caretaker during my shift. There was about 15 female patients there and had to be able to care for themselves. The gal, Lois, who ran the home was going to school to get her LPN license. So when I would come to work at 11pm she would be sitting there with her books out and we'd talk. She encouraged me to look into a scholorship and going to school too. I guess I was put in that one place at the right time because I'm sure I would never have thought to go ahead with nursing without her encouragement. I certainly had never had any great desire for this or any career. My first husband and I with 2 small children had bought 5 acres and put our mobile home on it. we had no running water for about 6 mo. till we could get a well drilled. So everyday I'd take all these gal. jugs into town to my mothers and use a hose and fill them all. When we took baths{one after the other} the water was used to flush the toilet. We had a long driveway thru the woods and till we could get it graveled there were many days it was to muddy to drive thru so we used the kids wagon and pulled it thru the trees with the water jugs. I got a job at a nursing home as an aide and worked nites on Fri and Sat so I could have gas money for the next week to go to school. At this time my daughter was starting kindergaren {BTW the year she graduated from highschool I also graduated again with RN degree} But I'm getting ahead of myself.

This year 73-74 I spent 12 mo. going to school for my LPN license. I did get the grant to pay for tuition and books. For clinical we wore white pinafores and blue blouses. I had this short stout New England instructor, Mrs. Johnson who was a real gem. I remember her riding in an elevator at the hosp. with me and she was eye level with my ears and she said "what's that in your ear?" Rhinestone ear rings. They had to go! Pinafore length and graduation uniform had to be exactly midknee.

A couple weeks before graduation {I was 3rd in the class} I was told that I should not have been allowed to attend class because I was a high school drop out and only had a certificate from a correspondance school. So I had to go to the Deans office the very next day and take the GED test, whick I passed OK.

These 12 mo. were very hard to get thru, with family, work, and study. My son was quite taken with learning medical terminology, he was about 8. I remember him getting stung by a wasp and telling people he got stung on his clavicle.
So I graduated in May and started to work right away as a new grad at something like 3.75$ per hr. I worked in a small very rural hospital which was very good to get some early experience. A year later I transfered to a "real" hospital in a bigger town about 15 miles away. It was here that I learned my OB skills.

So looking back, I wish I could thank my mother for her help with taking care of my daughter in the AM's and getting her to her afternoon kindergarten class. {And to thank Lois for her encouragement.} Then both kids would ride the bus home and one of us would be home. I think the scarriest time was that 1st year of working nites, Husb #1 had to leave for work about 45 min before I would get home so the kids were left alone during that time trying to get ready for school till I got there to see them off to the bus!. Now I'd be arrested for child neglect. They were about 7&9. But they never burned down the huse. I wonder if they remember anything about that year.

So now all these years later I will hang up my nursing "hat" and be a storekeep for FUN. Wish me luck

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Don't know if you can read this if you click on the picture to make it larger. Was in today's paper. I will quote some of the lady's comments about this baby. Apparently the foal was born and the stallion of the small band of about 6 mares herded them away leaving the new born in very cold temp. Some people spotted him and when they didn't return reported the cold baby. This lady takes in abandoned animals for a refuge, called Lucky Horse Rescue Corral. she said "I have been in on a lot of rescues, but this one was the greatest". "I love mustangs, I think they're a gift from God to us here in Nevada, and we're kind of pushing them out". She has raised about 10 foals in her bedroom. This baby was named Heidi-ho because her unusual horse sounds were kind of like a little yodel. She will be adopted out when she gets a little older. "she is my very first baby that actually uses a bottle, most go from the turkey baster to the bucket" "When God puts something in front of you. it's your responsibility to take care of that baby" What a lady. Makes you want to go out and do something nice doesn't it???

5 K walk

Beautiful day today!! I joined hundred more to walk on the new Freeway, well we have a part of a freeway, ha ha. It links in on the north end of the city and there is about 6 miles completed and will open to traffic next week. It will take about 4 more years to complete the rest that circles to the east of the city and comes out at the south end to link back to the highway.

It was fun to see all the different people who came out today. Everything from babies in strollers and wagons to bikes, joggers, a unicycle, and one old gentleman with his little elec. scooter. And lots of dogs of all kinds. What I was surprised by was the calm and peacefulness even with this many people. It was 10K in all {over 6 miles} But they had a turn around at the 5 K mark and I opted to take it and head back. Took a few pictures and will post a couple of them here. Oh, I overheard the cutiest conversation between several senior citizen women. One was saying she had just had her bone density done, and it showed she had osteopenea. I'm So Mad

I was accused of taking a winter break along with alot of other people, but reallly have been busy. Now what I am mad about, last week this creep of an inmate, asked me for my last name and when I asked him why, he said" because I am turning you into the state board of nursing". I asked him why and he said something about my lack of concern for his health and wellbeing, About that time Pat picked up on what was going on and she lit into him and told me not to say a word to him. I was upset and left a message on my bosses voice mail. The next day I guess Pat asked him did he really file a complaint and he said he had mailed it. She told him that he had made a big mistake because I was one of the few nursed there who did care and followed up on concerns and questions, ect. I was off that next day, but when I went in on Thurs I talked to my boss and he said yes the inmate had talked to him the day before and that I shouldn't worry that "they never win a case" About wanted to go bolistic on him. I said What case? there should NOT be a case. He should have shut him down right then. I was so mad at the boss not the idiot inmate, they are always trying to stir up trouble. But I feel my boss really let me down. Of course anyone can file a complaint. But with a spotless 35 year record, I am furious that this is happening. 6 more weeks and I am out and done. Now I am hoping that this inmate is just blowing smoke and didn't really file anything and he has no proof that I have done anything wrong. I only give him his meds, delivered to the unit in the evening. He is in the long term unit and there are about 15 {lame and lazy} ones that we deliver to. He is just a dirty old coot, who won't show up in the AM pill call line for his morning meds most of the time, and frequently doesn't come out of his room in the evening even though we come to the unit. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr! Give me strength to not kill the bugger!!

So now I have vented and still don't feel much better about it. Just stinks, right?

Have been so busy on final details on the sale of the house, inspections, papers signed ect. Then I have been packing alot too. Trying to help the sister in law, she bought a house in the nearby town where we are moving in Mo. But still no nibbles on her house here. One day she is gung ho to move and the next day she thinks she should stay here. Poor thing at her age, maybe we are asking to much to expect her to move too, but she can't stay here alone with no family. She is very dependant on AC for more than she realizes I think. But I know it will all work out in the end. They are getting her house on the multiple listing tomorrow and taking more pictures, my thinking is that should have been done a mo. ago. hmm.
