Ground is like a thirsty sponge

Finally a break in the heat wave. Cooled off only 89 degrees right now at noon. Got a nice little shower last evening and a small one this morning. Supposed to get more rain as it builds up down in Texas. Poor Texas, they have sure had the bad weather.

Been a rather busy week, seems while it was hot folks stayed home and cleaned house. Have had quite a few books brought in. Some were freebie's. Hey I like that. Even if I have to sort out what I can't use. I have a couple boxes to drop at the Salvation Army Monday.

Funny thing happened to me on the way to running up huge bills for cardiac testing! I had to stop the caffeine for 24 hrs prior to the tests last Monday. So I have been a good girl and stayed off it. I know I was drinking to much coffee (even though it was half decaf) and ice tea. So wouldn't you know the PVC's have about stopped!!
Should have tried this to start with, but a couple years ago I stopped for a couple mo. with the caffeine and it didn't make any difference in running the PVC's So I am just hanging in there, still feel a little head achy and tired from the lack of caffeine but I can deal with it. Just keeping busy.

Going to try to go to an auction Sunday. Got a flyer that they are selling alot of collectibles and books. Will at least go look. I am getting so crammed in here now not sure I sould bid on any, but want to see what they are. I really need more western.

Hey anyone out there want to sell(cheap) western paperbacks. I will pay shipping for sure. But not Louis L'Amore. Got lots of him. I really am looking for William W. Johnstone and Terry Johnson. Been buying a few lots of books on e-bay. Got stocked up with Anne Rice books!! Sort of got carried away. Been listing some and was blown away by bids on 25 old Barbara Cartland romance from the 70, sold for 31.00$plus 6 $ for shipping. Can you believe that?? Just never know.

Well now that I have tried to solicit what readers I have I better get out of here.

Stewed tomatoes on the vine!

Still in the middle of this heat wave. What can I say. At least I can be in the store and keep cool. I think I mentioned that we got the hay put up. Thanks to our wonderful neighbor gals. They rock, let me tell you, nothing like good neighbors. Ila from up the hill from us and the Sherry from across the road from Ila. They came down with a big trailer and a couple young nephews and they loaded a big wagon load right out in that heat. That was last Thurs, and I had a Dr. apt in the afternoon then stayed in town for an Avon mtg. Hubby helped them stack it in the barn in the evening, then they came back and loaded one more and he made them take it home with them for helping us. We got all the hay we need, so thats only fair. Boy the barn smells so good with fresh hay! The hay field is all turning brown now with this heat, and have started feeding a couple flakes of hay in the evening because the little pasture is nipped so short. supposed to cool down this weekend and 40% chance for rain. Sure hope it does.

Monday I went in for the tests that the Dr. ordered last Thurs. Took 5 hrs. Had lab, a nuculear stress test, cardiac echo cardiogram, and a halter monitor to wear 24 hrs.
Was glad to be rid of that, the sticky patches caused burn spots that look pretty nasty. Having all the tests because those pesky PVC's came back the last 6 mo. and seem worse at time. And I have been doing some reading that they might not be so beneign as they have always thought. My primary Dr. felt I should have a better work up done than I did 2 years ago when I had the halter monitor and the Dr. in Nv. just tried to reasure me that they would not hurt me and to relax and not worry. FINE, but the thumping around is not in his chest, its in MINE>
If all is fine with my heart, which I feel it will be, then I have 2 options, actually 3, one being to do nothing, two to try taking a beta-blocker,(ugh, drugs) or three they can run a little wire thing up into the heart and zap the little spot that is triggering the PVC's with a radio wave thing and that gets rid of the problem.
Right now I am off of caffeine. Tried that last time with no helpful results. But this time they do seem less. So not to wild to take the Rx. samples that I was given. Have a follow up apt the 27th. So will play it by ear. One good thing that I saw, was that I had no PVC's while the stress test was going on with my heart rate up to 140. So that is good. I did have some just after it while I was in the recovery phase.

Well enough about my health. All else is fine. Just dang hot here in the midwest.And I think the tomatoes really have stewed on the vine, at least the tiny cherry ones that are right in the hot sun. And when we gather eggs they are so warm!

I know I am not alone with this miserable heat. I do remember last winter when it was so cold and we had all the ice that I said that we would be wishing for some of that cold come July and Aug. So here we are. Ready for fall. NOW!

Finally got the hay cut again. It had about all dried up before he cut it. Believe me the drunks that cut our hay this year won't be invited back next year. So hard to find anyone to bale small bales on small acres. Hope he gets it baled today.

Had an interesting day yesterday at the store. Since its been so hot business in the afternoon has been really slow, so I expected that, but had a steady little flow all day. Had a hitch hiker stop in. Made me a little nervous, but had another customer in the store. His story was that he lived in Springfield and the VA hosp had given him a bus ticket to Ar. for a medical apt. but failed to tell him it was only one way that they paid. So he didn't have money to pay for bus fare and was catching rides all day to get home. It was stinking hot, so he stopped in to cool off. He was clean, had a clean tote bag, so I believed him. Even gave him a soda out of my frig. He stayed about an hr. Another customer came in, unloading alot of books on me from his garage sale, (I get quite a bit of that) About 20 really nice books free was great. But I took this huge set of encyclopedias, very nice and clean. I told him I would try to sell them or give them away. So they are stacked by my desk with a sign, "Make an Offer". Anyway the hiker left, hope he got a ride home.

Sat I went to a customers home to pick up books he wanted to get rid of. I have learned to not believe folks when they say they are "nice" books. Well ended up with a pickup load, no kidding, of old books. He was going to burn them, they were left from an auction he did. So I hauled them all home and have been sorting and wiping down all these books. The majority are harlequin romance. I scoff too. Buttttttt, hold the boat. I checked e-bay and was amazed to see that large lots of them do sell pretty good. So am working some up to list in lots of like 25 or 30.
I did get about 1 box of nice books that I am sure will sell. The other thing I do is fix up boxes of 40 and call them my "grab box" and sell for 5$. I sold quit a few of them last summer, after I threw alot in the dumpster because I thought no one would want the dang things. Go figure, huh?

Well gotta run. The boss, (Oh, thats ME) says I have to close up shop this afternoon for an apt. in the big city. So taking the rest of the afternoon to run errands and attend an Avon mtg. this evening.

She's a good girl when she is asleep

OK, so we are't as heartless as I sounded on last post. At least I posted about how we were going to have to find a home for Suzy. Well she has weezeled her way into our hearts so we are going to allow her to finish growing up and blending in with us. Ha!! Who am I kidding, we will will be the ones adjusting to HER>
She is doing real well on the housebreaking. Understands to tinkle when we take her out. As for the other business, she prefers to head out to the pasture as soon as she eats, so that's not a problem. Stays outside most of the day. Biggest problem is poor old Molly, not knowing what to do with this kid. Sort of wants to play with her but not sure how, she pokes her with her nose and sort of snaps at her ears. Lucky Suzy is very submissive to all this, but you can see she would like to play.
Got her stitches out today, all healed up, and has gained 1/2 pound since we got her.
OK enough about her.

The other critter that we are concerned about is the old Momma donkey, Jenny. Had the vet out this morning and was afraid he would have to put her down. She is pretty old and has bad feet and for the last 3 days can't put wt on one front foot. Have been carrying feed and water to her. But the vet thinks she was foundered years ago and will get these infections in the hoof from time to time and it goes up into the leg. Gave us antibiotics to give her and gave her a pain shot. So we will see. He seemed pretty sure this would help, and she would be back on her feet (all 4 of them) soon.

Hot, Hot, Hot. Boy can't believe how hot it feels and we haven't hit 100 yet this year. But the humidity is so high it makes 95 seem like 105. I feel sorry for folks who have to work out in this.

Past behavior is a predictor of future behavior

Well something like that per: Dr. Phil.

I am a good example or I should say hubby and I are. Had a little talk Sun. about our behavior of tying ourselves down with critters and end up pouring any extra money into them or remodeling the house. I won't even go there about the house thing, that would be an entire blog. But for the critters, they do tie you down. It ends up feeling like everyone is out taking trips and having a good time and we don't. I know that is an excuse but somewhat true at the same time. There are short events that we could go to like a few hours or even all day. But the money thing is so true. By the time you buy feed, then there is always something like fixing fence, need to hire someone to put in a new cross fence between the horse pasture and the hay field. Then there is gates, worming, and then hoof trimming at 25$ each animal 2 to 4 times a year. Then what if they get sick. Right now Sam has a sore eye from the flys. The neighbor gal is wonderful with horses and came down and Sam let her put some fly repellent that comes in a cream on his face. He hates the spray stuff and won't stand still for it. So we learned something new. Hubby is off today to buy us some plus a face guard to put on him to keep the flys off.

But overall the 2 days at home was good. Went to lunch, took SIL, on sun. Then on Mon took big Sister to her radiation tx. Hubby did a wonderful small roast on the grill Mon evening.

Cloudy this morning so did my morning walk in town with Chopra in my ear. I am listening to his book: Life after Death. It is wonderful, I highly recommend it. I will have to listen to it alot of times to take it all in. I think he is my biggest hero of all times.

Walked my MAD off

Well I did walk my mad off, and now I am hot. Don't know which is worse, being mad or being hot and sweaty, I mean dripping down your back and running into your pants, so that when you sit down it feels like you have wet yourself.

Guess my mad was just an accumulation of stuff this morning, crummy way to start a Saturday. But didn't sleep much last nite. Blame that on the new dog Suzy. We (I) have started letting her stay in the house at nite. She has been doing real well on going out the front door and tinkling right away and gets alot of praise and allowed to come back in. Have had a couple accidents. But I think she is doing pretty good. Of course when I wake up in the middle of the night I take her out again because I don't trust her to go all nite yet. Last nite her ear was bothering her, so I did my doctoring with a little vinegar and alcohol in her ears, (It worked real well over a week ago). Well last nite it set her off and must have hurt. This was about 10pm. She rolled, flipped and rubbed her ears on the floor. Had to hold her to calm her down and tried warm water to rinse her ears out, and took her out side and sat with her while she rolled on the grass. Anyway it calmed down and she came in but I didn't sleep much at all, listening for her and getting up at 3 and 5. So I am mostly just tired this morning, and it seems like all the little things get to you. Like closing your finger in the drawer, can't make my walkman work,(yes some folks still use walkman's) prob dead batteries, after I looked for the carrying case for 10 min. Suzy putting dirty paws on my clean shorts. So was late getting out of the house, as I wanted to get in town to walk for 30 min. before it got to hot. Well that didn't work to good. Did get the nice long walk in, (without the soothing voice of Deepak that I had planned on) Ohhhhhhhh, doesn't sound so bad but it felt like it at the time.
Store has been slow this week. Everyone off having fun vacations, I am sure. Worrying about if I made a mistake keeping this dog. She is so sweet, but we really did not want another dog. So if the opportunity came along to find her a good home I would probably jump on it. Our old dog is having a hard time dealing with this young one.

Well I have whined enough for now. Think I am grouchy too because hubby has had to spend so much time helping his sister getting unpacked, but I knew it would be this way. I don't mind that part, but what I do mind is the fact that at his age, she is using up his time and wearing him out, and I can't help but resent her "using him up" Know what I mean. Dang it he is mine to "use up"

The new Suzy

Here is another picture of Suzy. We have decided that the front half is a mix of terrier and the back half has some beagle in it. Well maybe the nose if beagle too.
Got her spayed last Fri.and all her shots. Having trouble getting her to slow down. She went out last nite when we fed the donkeys and she got to running in the pasture and hiding in the taller grass and then run and flip herself over. I could almost hear her laughing. Now if we can just get her house broke. Only let her in for an hr or so at a time and of course she loves it. Have had a couple accidents. Its catching her so I can scold her is the problem. She is learning the no word pretty well. OK that is enough dog stuff, but she is cute isn't she?

Caught the big daddy coon last nite. Found that something was taking the lid off the plastic garbage can in the tack room that we have feed in for the horse and donkeys. So set the trap again and got him. Sorry to say he was not a catch and release like the Mom and 3 kids. Our neighbor has lost all their chickens in the last couple weeks. So he looked rather guilty and real mean. He was a little rough on the humane trap that we caught him in.

Bought 7 more pretty red hens this morning. Well actually they are pullets as they aren't quite old enough to lay eggs. So that will make us 18 hens not counting the 3 wild banties. Funny thing, now that we have Suzy outside, these 3 are staying away from the flower beds and deck. Yea, for Suzy. I notice they stay inside the chicken yard most of the time where they are safe.

Should think of a chicken joke but I think I used it already!!

Getting SIL settled in

Movers came with all of SIL's "stuff" yesterday and got unloaded in good time. She has a cute little house in near by town about 10miles away. Wish it was closer as hubby has to go daily for awhile to help her with unpacking. But all the essentials are done. phone, cable, banking, a few groceries, beds made. She is amazing that she is getting around so well, supposed to be using a cane, but haven't seen her use it yet. Been after her to carry the cell phone in her pocket. She had lifeline while in Nv. after her hip fx. but not sure if she wants to hook it up. I am trying to talk her into wearing a fanny pack or use a pocket and get in the habit of putting the phone on her all day, and then charger at nite by her bedside. So will see.

Tomorrow is vet day for Suzy. Hope I am doing the right thing, I didn't want another dog, but will give her a try. Want to try bringing her to the store with me. Can put up a little kiddy gate to keep her in "my" space, She seems pretty smart. So she is getting spayed, shots, and wormed. When we lived here before about 10 or 12 years ago we took in a little beagle and did the same thing with her and then donated her to a group home in a near by town, so she had a great home. So will play that by ear.

Closing thought: Be what you is and not what you ain't, cause if you ain't what you is, you is what you ain't. Ponder that one for a bit.

When bugs give a party, they never ask the chickens!

Well hubby made it home safe and sound, and not a day to soon. He may have had to commit doggy murder! Traveling 3 days across country with an 82 year old sister with 2 VERY spoiled chiwawas!(its just easier to really spell it wrong!) He said it would take them up to 2 hrs. to get packed up, eat, and tend to the dogs. They be very fat little chiwawas too. SIL worried that they couldn't poop so they had to stop at every other rest stop to put their harnesses back on, (you know they don't like to wear them) and walk their little butts around. SOOOOOOOOOO glad I wasn't there. I am sure hubby deserves a metal for this.

But they are all safe after a near colision coming out of the big tunnel west of Denver. The moving van will be here tomorrow and unload all her stuff. I am sure it will take her till Jan to get stuff put away. But we will help as we can.

Meet Suzy

Is this a face you could not love?? She is a real charmer. Very quiet and submissive. Have started letting her come into the house to see how Molly will accept her. So far so good. She just bet not try to get into Molly's favorite chair. But she goes behind the recliner to the tub of stuffed "bunnys" ( all of Molly's animals are called bunnys) and gets them one at a time and takes them into the bedroom where it is dark and puts them on the rug. I call her name and she comes bounding back out then gets another one. So far she has learned her name and does pretty good with the word no. Except last nite when I went out to do the chores and she chased the barn chickens clear out into the pasture till she lost them. At least she is keeping them out of my flower beds in the mornings.

Meet Suzie

Do I Know You?

What do we really know about each other? I mean realy deep down in our hearts and souls? We work so hard to hide our true selves. We have this image that we want others to think is who we are, but it is so false. I was listening to a CD about humility and humilation. It just made me think, well guess that was the point, right. We have a fear of humilation that is deepseated, probably the underlying fear of all fears. Fear of loss, rejection, failure, all are really fears of humilation. But if we can develope our humility, we can loose those fears.
When you see the person who is all bluster and indignation, they are really afraid. So can we look at that person with different eyes and see the real person? It can make us see things so differently, help us lose our frustration and anger, help us to accept that person for who they really are.

If you think about our fear of failure as fear of humilation you can see it in everyday little things from how we fix our hair, what to wear, how much we weigh, what we do for work,and leisure. About everything we do carries a worry of being humilated. And what makes us this way? Is it our lack of trust in ourselves? Trust in some higher being? Wow, this could get really deep.

Guess I just felt like being a little philosophical today. (had to look that one up)

So just my thoughts today. Maybe I need more vacation time, you think?

Branson Vacation

If I did it right my video from Silver Dollar City, outside of Branson, should come up just after this post. Hope you enjoy it. The Swing is a new ride there. No way I would get on it, but as you can tell by all the screams the kids love it.

I had a nice relaxing time. I hit alot of garage sales on Fri as I drove down. A two hr drive turned into 4, but thats OK. On Sat my brother came down and we had dinner out and took in a show, then on Sun went to the IMAX theater and saw the movie they did special for IMAX about the La. area, before and after the hurricane. Was very educational. Didn't realize that it was mostly man caused that so much of the swamp area has dissapeared and that was the buffer for the ocean storms. Quite a good show and of course you get dizzy looking at this huge 12 story screen, you feel like you are flying over the swamps.

I will post pictures on my other blog site of the area, if you can't find it, just scan down a few posts as I put it there.

Was glad to get home, came back a day early since there was company coming in from out of state. Plus hubby was packing up to head out Sat to go back to Nv. to get his sister moved. He almost got caught Sun nite in Utah on the east side of that huge fire, but by Mon mornig they opened the highway he needed to get on and he make it thru OK without having to detour way south. IF all goes as planned, the movers will load out Fri and they will start back on Sat. Guess SIL is doing well after the fx. hip and is about ready to get rid of the cane.

Have a cute little stray dog that "showed" up Sat. Is it true if you bath a stray dog you have bonded for life??

Vacation Time WooHoo!!

Well I am getting packed up for a week at our Time Share in Branson. Got my season pass for Silver Dollar City. Packed some awesome books, DVD's and CD's, walking shoes and small backpack. So think I am set to take off tomorrow. No computer, no blogging, nada! Cold Turkey, off line. But I am ready. Looking forward to a few days of alone time, then some family is joining me later in the week. So that will be fun. Hubby is staying home to take care of the critters and get the lawn all mowed up. When I get back, having a family get together at the farm, then the next day Hubby is headed out to Nv. again to get his sister moved back again.

She is all healed up from her fractured hip, and has been on a cane now for a couple weeks and doing well. Hate it that it is the hottest time of the year. She lives in Carson City, just over the hill from the big fires up at Lake Tahoe. While we lived there a couple years ago there was a big fire on the west side of Carson City, up in the big pines where all the nice homes are. Looks bad when a big fire goes thru. We could see the fire from our home. Burned down over 30 homes and we thought that was bad. Can't imagine 300 up at the lake.

Well I am off, wishing a safe trip to the nieces traveling across country to be here for a visit with their Mom and all of us. Looking forward to that. I know they will have a great time together, and will get to see some cousins they haven't seen in ages. You know its really all about family isn't it?

I just ran (well walked) to the bank before I opened the store this morning, and dropped in at the little restaurant on my way back. I do that once in awhile to treat myself to someone else's coffee. Anyway I love it when little encounters just seem to happen. At the table by the door was a gal who recognized me from my book store and she introduced me to the older gentleman sitting with her. She said he is a local "character." Guess he is into Mo. Cowboy Poetry, and all sorts of things. We ended up doing some name dropping of Nevada Cowboy Poetry famous people and I guess he has been invited to Elko Nv. to their annual get together. I have attended the Cowboy Poetry thing that the hospital aux. puts on annually in Carson City. What a hoot. Hoping they come by the store to visit more and maybe bring me some books to sell. He has published his own poetry books.

Funny, just this morning hubby and I were sitting on the deck enjoying the morning coolness and talking about horses and remembering the pack trip we did at Elko back in about 1988. Part of the trip was a real steep trail down the mountain side and the horse I was on "Waddy" got spooked and sort of reared up so I bailed off and walked him down the rest of the way. Would you believe that one of the Elko poetry guys we talked about at the restaurant was a guy named Waddy Mitchell. Spooky huh?

Blowing Smoke

Had the weirdest thing happen Sunday. We had finished dinner and was out on the deck and hubby did a big burp. He blew what looked like smoke from his mouth and nose. I have never seen anything like it. He does not smoke and he said it felt real dry, so was not a vapor of any kind. Well this has bugged me till last pm when it hit me as to what it was.

After he ate his dinner he had taken his vitamins, and he has quite a hand full to take. I think a few minutes later he did his burp and one of the capsules had dissolved enough that the powder inside flew up his esophagus and came out his mouth and nose with his burp. That is the only logical thing I can think of. Isn't that the weirdest thing ever??

Hay is a WashOut! And baby chicks too!!

Well so much for making hay while the sun shines. Had the hay cut a week ago then it set in raining, got 1/2 in 2 days later, then kept getting sprinkles almost daily, Was almost dried out on Sun, then Sun nite it rained pretty good and kept raining all Mon morning, Got over 3 inches, with alot of flooding across the field into the ditches and creek. So this first cutting is totally ruined. What a bummer, as the first cutting is always the best. Hope it dries out enough so the guy can get in and rake up what is left and bale it and get it off the field so the new can grow ok and we can get another cutting or maybe 2 more time. We usually get 3 cuttings a year. It is raining again right now. Seems it just can't quit.

Sat pm. we discovered that 2 of our wild banty chickens hatched out babies. 3 in one batch and 4 in the other. Those sneaky girls flew into the chicken pen to snuggle up with the rooster. See the rooster and our laying hens can't fly out of the chicken yard. They have it good, a nice big grassy yard with a couple cedar trees and a chicken house to go into with nest boxes. So the only way the banties got fertile eggs was to fly into the chicken yard. They are sort of free spirits, and live out around the barn most of the time and have free run of the farm. No way to contain them. Have 3 in all. Well the baby chicks are reddish with some stripping down the back. I only got a good look because I used the binoculars! They won't let you get very close. But they seem to be hanging out down by the carport so we put feed and water out for them to help out. So we will see if they can protect them from the wild critters.

Making Hay While The Sun Shines!

Yea, finally we are getting our hay field cut. Just hope it doesn't rain for a few days. Seems it has rained nearly daily for weeks. Kept track on the calendar and for May we got a total of 7 inches, and have had 2 1/2 inches so far for June. Seems like we got April in May this year. Also the baler is taking a larger portion of the hay for his share, It has been a 50-50 deal in the past but now is is 1/3 for owner and 2/3 for the baler. The cost of fuel is the reason. We don't really care as long as we get enough hay in the barn to feed the horse and 3 donkeys thru the winter.

Speaking of donkeys, I have finally started working with Miss Flossy. She is our baby, but is getting big now. About 10 mo. old, {and the naughty little secret is that I catch her still nursing sometimes} But she has been a little biter from the start. The folks who had her when she was born thought it was cute to let her suck their fingers. NOT. But I find that if I clip the lead rope to her halter and "lead" her to the barn daily for their little feed treat, she is distracted and haven't had any biting. But don't turn your back!! Have given her a little smack on the nose and a firm NO. She is still just full of energy.

Neighbor across the road brought a couple of his horses home after having them on some other pasture all winter and spring. So all the neighbor horses had to call out their welcomes and trot up and down the fence to show off.

Flowers are blooming and have tomatoes set on now. Glad I have help with all the lawn mowing now that hubby is back home. It is a team effort to keep it all mowed and trimmed. But it is so peaceful in the country, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

What a great weekend!! Brother and I drove up to Ia. on Sat to go to he high school alumni. Man what a room full of gray headed people. Not many there from my class as it was an in between year. Brother had a good time as there were 28 from his class. Got to go to the historic village of Bentonsport on Sun. and hung out with an "old" friend that I grew up with. There was a weekend craft show going on so ran into other people that I knew. My friend and her husband have a place called Iron and Lace, She is a potter and he is a blacksmith. They are the real thing and do wonderful work. Came back on Sun. Rained off and on but was a safe drive and good time for a road trip with little brother.

Holiday Weeked

I rarely travel over a holiday but my brother and I are leaving Sat AM and headed to Ia. to spend the weekend. It is his class reunion and I am going with him, then visit some family, and on Sun there is a festival thing at a local little town that should be fun. And will probably meet folks I know, music, crafts, and friends, can't beat that.

Big sister just got out of the hospital this week after going in to have a large "lump" removed from her inner thigh. It had started out as a marble size lump about 10 weeks ago and had gotten larger, I guess about orange size, and was quite painful. Everyone was surprised to find that it is malignant. She says they are sending the pathology to Mayo Clinic for testing as it is something rather rare. So we won't know for a week or so what the outcome of the tests and treatment plan will be.

Other big sister is getting ready to move down from KC this next week. So it will be good to have almost all of us living locally. Only big brother is still in NC.

I think I have mentioned that I have been selling books on e-bay. Usually I have done pretty good. Have sent 3 packages to Canada and had charged an extra fee for that. Well with all the new postal rates and all, I sent out a package with 8 hard back books, and it had to go priority mail {anything over 4#} Ended up the books that I sold for 25$ {which was a low bid to start with}plus 16$ for shipping, ended up costing me 30.50$ to ship!!! Guess I won't be shipping out of the country again.
I order books for people and it is outragous. I order a book for 50cents, then it is 3.99 for shipping. Then I have to charge a little fee for ordering and paying for the book on my account. So the customer ends up paying close to 7.00 for the book. But guess if it is something they really want they don't care.

Oh, and hubby got home Mon. Gee I almost forgot. Oops. Glad to have him home safe and sound. Now he can get in on this yard mowing thing! I was needing some help here. But life is good. Will post some pictures of my flower bed later, things are sure growing nice. Have a good weekend and be safe.

What's the Book Lady reading now?

Just finished reading a great book. I am into Nicholas Evans book The Smoke Jumper. What a good read. Of course its about these Montana fire fighters, about friendship, honor, bravery, and love. This was my book store read, so at home I am about to finish up the third Odd Thomas book by Dean Koontz, This one is called Brother Odd. I have enjoyed this series and think there is another one to come.
Before this I read Koontz book, Seize the Nnight, which I found out was the second of a set so now have to find the first one, Fear Nothing. They are about a guy that has a genetic disorder that prevents him from being in any light,called xeroderma pigmentosum. So he lives by the night and near his town is an abandoned military base that had been doing experiments and people are "changing". A fun book to read.

Hubby will be home on Mon. Wow, can't believe its been 7 weeks and was only to be 3. SIL is doing well at home and follow up Dr. apts are good. She she will continue to get PT and OT at home for awhile and a bath aide till she can safely shower alone. Looks like she will be getting moved in about 2 months. So crossing my fingers that nothing else happens.

Neighbor put in a cross fence with and electric webbing that is new to me and has let her neighbor across from her put her 2 horses and mini donkey in the small pasture that she has fenced off. It borders onto our fence where our donkeys and horse live. What a little rodeo watching them get acquainted. The little donkey is older than Flossy but much smaller as he is a miniature and he is very vocal. Has a very different bray than ours. And so darn cute. My horse thinks he is a wind up toy as he puts his head over the fence and noses his back, like "where's the Key?"

A pinch of this and a dab of that

Well, just when you think there is a plan things happen to make changes for you. As posted previously, we were going to put SIL on a plane the 21st and movers scheduled again for the 23rd and then hubby could come home. WELL, now the plan is that she will get out of the rehab hosp this Sat. Hubby will stay there one week, and she is staying for 90 days. Then he will have to drive back again and move her by the first of Sept. It really makes sense, she can get her rehab at home and continue to gain strength and mobility and follow up with her doctors there. She is a very determined little old lady and I think is wearing the therapists out!
Hubby is sure ready to come home. But next week he can get her stocked up on supplies she needs, they had about cleaned her freezer out. She has a couple friends who will check on her daily and will be getting an alert "I have fallen and can't get up" braclet to wear. Her house there is safer for her at this point, level access to back yard. In the mean time she has some work on the sunroom on her house here that can be completed before she gets here and it will also make it easier to go out into the back yard for her. So I think it will all work out.

In the mean time, I have been working on a surprise for hubby. The carpenter has been back to work at the house and the new kitchen counter, sink and faucets are going in as I type. Yippy. Really the surprise if for ME. Will post a picture when done. Ever see a black sink? At least it won't show coffee stains, right?

Got 1 1/2 in of rain last nite and lots of thunder. Having a city wide garage sale Fri and Sat. Been sorting out books to put out on a table in front of the store to sell for 25 cents. Maybe it won't get rained out. Sure have had a wet spring. Hay is getting tall. Will need baled about the time we can get dried out enough.

Well enough rattling on and on. Probably lost most of you back there after the first few lines, but I don't care, cause this is MY blog. Right??

Just want to report something I heard on the news. With the freeze we got this spring in the midwest, there are going to be fewer natural flowers for our little humming birds. So folks get those feeders out if you haven't already. I have at least 15 to 20 buzzing around my 2 feeders. They are such a delight to watch.

I am sharing the info on mixing your own food for them. saves alot of money.

To each cup of water add 1/4 cup of white table sugar. Stir in a pan and bring to a boil. {boiling helps to slow fermentation}. allow the sugar solution to cool before filling your feeder. Extra nectar should be stored in the refrigerator. Do NOT use honey. Do NOT use any dye or coloring.

The little guys will find you. Poor things have been flitting around my xmas lights. NO we don't have them down yet! But what the heck, had company over the weekend and we turned them on and called them PARTY Lights! Worked for me.

HoHum

Have been busy and not very inspired to write much. So just an update, SIL is still in rehab and working hard. Hope to get her out and to her home in a few more days. Then they can get the movers reschedule, and get a flight booked for her. Don't know if I mentioned, she has a friend who says she will fly back with her, then turn around and fly back home, same day. I thought maybe I could do that but it would make me a long day and driving home from the airport at midnight, over 2 hrs. If this other gal will do it, that would be great. Hubby is getting tired of being stuck in Carson City. Besides I miss him.
Had 2 good days to mow the yard and beyond so that is caught up, but with all the rain this week looks like I will be back at it next weekend. Put some tomato plants out and have flowers set out.
Had a creepy guy in the store today. He stopped in trying to sell me some books. Seems he used to have a book store, well I ended up hearing his life story. Kids worthless, in prison, on probation, or addicts. He lives on disability himself and looking for more help for himself. You know we need more good citizens like him. He must have weighed in at least at 300#, complained about his 500$ mo. payments on a honking big truck that had a tonto cover and he had a bunch of books in the back. I was pretty glad when he left. Besides my coffee had gotten cold!

Update on SIL condition

Well she made it thru surg. with hip pinning and blood transfusions OK. That was on Mon. By Wed they got her off the morphine and started PT and OT. On Thurs was moved into a rehab floor of the hosp. and working on how to dress herself with the bum leg and getting up and down to the bathroom. Guess the plan is to stay for about a week in rehab and then home. I hear she is giving the hosp staff hell, thats my SIL. They will be glad to be rid of her, LOL. so we will see how she is doing by the first of next week then see about an airline ticket and get a date set for the movers again. My gut feeling is that as soon as she is moving around some she will try to talk herself into the drive instead of airplane. But hopefully the Dr. will nix that for her. I am finding her a Dr. here to take her care and will set up home PT for her. She is still worried about all the trouble she is causing us and how I am having to manage alone. Heck, I always like my alone time. I am not complaining. Only complaint was when that donkey stepped on my toe and I had to hobble out to do chores. But it is pretty much OK now.

Looks like a great weekend coming up. The grass is about 6 inches tall or more with all the rains. So I will be on the mower alot to catch it up. But I don't mind. I would rather work outside and inside any day of the week. Got tomatoe plants to set out and have some baby dogwood trees that I got a week ago free from the fish hatchery near by, so guess I will find a place to get them set out.

In the blink of an eye!

Wow, how we take life for granted. Really in a blink of an eye everything can change. Hubby and his sister were in the last 2 days of packing up for her move back here. Movers scheduled for Wed, the 25th. Mon. they went out to breakfast and went to the store top pick up a couple things. Bebo {sister} turned to greet someone and her hip gave way and down she went. Ended up she had fractured the long bone, femur, up near the hip socket. Alot of pain, she is 83 and a tiny 90 lb. person. Paramedics had to give her 2 shots of morphine before they could move her. They did surg. later in the day top put a rod in the bone and a plate and screw to secure the fracture. At 83 she has never been hospitalized, or had any surgery before. But she made it thru OK. Plan is to have her in rehab in the next couple days. That is expected to take 2 weeks to get her up and going with a walker. She hates to fly but right now we are thinking that will be the best way to get her back here. Hubby will drive and manage her 2 little dogs. Oh, and they are spoiled rotten dogs too. He can manage better with just the dogs and not her with a walker for 4 days driving. So I am hubbyless for 2 to 3 weeks more. Her biggest worry was for me, having to manage without hubby. Well that and her dogs. Ha Ha. My biggest concern is for my poor hubby having to deal with all this by himself. But he will manage and they will get her moved soon.

Moral of this lesson, Don't take life to serious, things can happen in the blink of an eye that can mess up YOUR plans.

Had a nice 1/2 inch rain last p.m. that came down in about 15 minutes. Afraid the grass is getting ahead of me. Will have to start mowing a little at a time each day between rains. dc

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about

I know Rosie is very controversial but I do have to agree with her today. She said that the guy who shot all the kids at the college should not be getting all this air time even showing his home videos of himself. Isn't this just what he wanted? So now we are playing into his fantasy and giving him his fame he sought. So Sad. This is a crazy world we live in now isn't it. Now if someone ticks you off on the highway or store you are afraid to speak up. Even when they are young. I have had minor run ins with teen agers and you let them intimidate you, and just back off when you really want to get in their face. Well again it is so sad when the world can offer so much joy and happiness. Maybe in 100 years we will look back and see what a troubled time this was. Lets hope we are still here in 100 years. I plan to be, how about you??

Aky Braky Toe!!

Oh, my toe hurts. While doing chores last nite the donkeys crowded me and I thought I had pushed Momma, Jenny over far enough to get past her and all she did was shift her feet and one came down on my little toe thru tennis shoes. OUCH. I am sure the neighbors up the hill heard me moan. It burned like fire. I am pretty sure it is broken. Mostly only hurts when I flex it like walking. So here I go trying to get out and do chores and walking with these tiny steps so I don't flex the toes on the right foot. Ohhhhhhhhh I hate to be laid up, to much stuff to do!! Oh, yea while I am complaining have a big bruise on my leg just below the knee where I hit it on the trailer hitch. OK I have complained enough for today. Got stuff to do!

Why do I have to come to work to rest??

My weekend is Sun and Mon. Sun. I spent most of the day at my SIL's house helping get it ready for her to get moved back into later this mo. I vacumed so the carpet cleaners can come next week, mopped the BR and kitchen. Have a carpenter coming in to re-caulk the floor tiles, and re-do the dryer vent. Some yo-yo had vented it into the garage. The painting is all done. Not exactly happy with his work, if I had the time, I could have done every bit as good a job. I paid him a little extra to have his kids rake the yard and bag up the leaves, granted there was alot but the job is not finished so just said to heck with it. When you want something done it is usually best to just do it yourself. So will finish up that job after work today.
On Mon. went to Ar. to visit with daughter, and went "shopping". Ended up back in Mo and went to the local college that was having a book sale and got some more nice nearly new ones there.
On Sun. I stopped at a garage sale and got a cute little sewing table with a chair in nice shape. wooden too. for 10$ Gave the chair to my grand daughter and brought the table into the store. Lets see I also took a dresser and coffee table and end table to the daughter and brought home a kitchen cabinet to repair for her.
It needs alot of TLC. She was about to throw it out, I said let me fix it. so did some work on it last nite, glues some strips around the bottom, tightened up alot of screws. Sanded the drawers and so far have 3 coats of bright yellow pain on them. It will be useable and clean when I am done. So now I have her cabinet held hostage till she comes up next week to pick it up! There is a method to my madness.

Hubby still in Nv. All is well at the farm. Over 2 inches of rain last week, hope the freezing at night is over. I brought home several free dogwood trees from the fish hatchery Sat. Would like to see the trees and shrubs that got leaves frozen off have a chance to leaf out again. Maybe I can stay home next weekend and do some things for myself that I have planned. Sort of spring cleaning projects!

So I have to be a little crazy on this one. My big sister is having a birthday today so want to acknowledge her as it is a biggy! Oops. Should I have given that away? The picture is of an Easter Bunny that came across the highway to greet me Sat. at the store. He never said a word. Don't bunnies Talk??

What a busy weekend. Did some things Sun afternoon to get the house ready that Hubby's sister will be moving into at the end of the Mo. Took a twin bed over so she will have a place to sleep while waiting on the movers. The painter is about finished up at the house and had extra paint that we took back to the store. Then we went home and started mowing and raking. The freeze this last week did quit a bit of damage to tender leaves.
On Mon. finished mowing and got the horse and donkeys hooves trimmed up. Wish I had taken a video of Flossy getting her hooves done. Last fall they just sat on her to do it as she was pretty small yet. Those little hooves really grow out fast on those babies. But this time she needed a little man handling. The guy had to put a nose cinch on her. Hated to see it but it calmed her down and he got the job done as we could not hold her. He made a loop out of the lead rope and slipped it thru the halter and over her nose so when she pulled she squeezed her nose and had trouble breathing. Sounds cruel but it is effective. Sampson the horse was worried about her as she is his "baby" and he kept coming up close to see if she was OK.
The horse and the adult donkeys are real easy to do and stand still just fine. So I guess I better get busy with a little more training with Miss Flossy. He suggested I start tying her to the post with the lead rope and let her stand for an hour or 2, to learn what being tied means. I have a short video of her eating spaghetti that I will have to post one of these days.

Took Hubby to the airport real early this morning. Like 3AM. He had an early flight to Nv. and we are over 2 hrs from the airport. So he will be in Nv. helping get his sis packed up and drive her back.

Yippy so that means I am footloose now!! Ha, I have several work projects to get started on, so will keep busy, nothing like last time he left town, unless the carpenter gets time to start my kitchen counter top. hmmmmmmmm....:) :)

Today is my big brothers birthday. He lives very far away. Thanks to cell phones and computers we are better at keeping in touch the last few years. Of course our lives have slowed down alot to and that makes a difference. If I can find a certain picture of this brother taken many years ago I will post it. If you click on the picture you can see what a baby he was when he joined the Navy!! Was that back in '02? So Happy Birthday, wish you were here so I could spank you!! :) :)

Yesterday we were resting on the deck after some very hard work, sipping some ice tea, and a mocking bird was in a tree just a few feet away and singing his head off. I tried to do a little video of him and have downloaded it just below. Sorry you can't see the bird in the tree. We do enjoy them when they come to nest in our yard. After the babies are grown they all seem to fly away and are gone till the next spring. We enjoy the songs.

We cleared alot of tree limbs off the hay field that fell over from the timber. What wonderful work, makes you feel alive to get out and sweat a little. Hubby got his first tick of the season, Ouch. I hate those little suckers!

A fellow blogger friend recently posted about how our jobs are being sent out of the country. It was a very good post. Anyway it reminded me of this picture I had saved. When I was helping my brother with his new computer this winter I think this is the guy we talked to!!

Hubby is safe home from his trip. I think the dog missed him the most!! At least she fell all over him and whined alot. I was a little more reserved. LOL
He has one more trip to make next mo. to fly back to Nv. and help with the rest of the packing for his sister, then drive her back after the movers get loaded up.

The carpenter is pulling things all together. Got the vanity set and water and drain lines hooked up, and hole cut for the sink. All he has left is the tile around the baseboard and tile the counter top.

Bro. helped me Sun. and we worked our tails off. Got the carpet squares laid in the bedroom and the "dressing room/closet" sure looks nice, and new baseboards and door trim. Sat. I stayed up late to paint the closet and the bathroom. Also ran to Lowes to pick up the windows that we ordered. We will get to them after the bathroom is all done.

Whew, I think I need some plain old yard work now. Still raking up small limbs from the ice storm. Found my first tick yesterday, or I should say he found me. He was walking up my pant leg. So it reminded me it was time to put the tick/flea stuff on the dog. We use the monthly thing and it seems to work real well.

Well I have a special picture to post tomorrow. I forgot to bring the camera to the store so will do that later. Best get back to "work" and sell some books. Have a set of 16 Louis L'Amour books on E-bay that I am watching. Bidding is going up----Yahoo for me.

Poor Little Mouse

This guy was walking along and saw a little mouse in the ditch. He grabbed the mouse real quick and held him up and said "I'm going to jerk your tail off" and he preceded to do just that. Then he said "now I'm going to bite your ear off" and he preceded to do just that.

Well this police officer happened along and saw what was happening and he said. "The next thing you do to that little mouse, I am going to do to you!"

I found this site from something on TV. Worth checking out if you are like most of us, battling the bulge. 3fatchicks.com Looks like there is some good stuff to filter out there. For myself I just try to concentrate on eating healthy stuff. Anyone tried the new flat bread, whole grains, come in a nice size, about 4 in by 8 in. Made a wonderful pizza crust, I added a couple spoons of sauce, crumbled browned ground turkey, lots of cheeze and baked about 15 min. till bubbly and brown. Can add what ever. Also makes a great roll up for sandwich. I am having a hard time even looking at white bread now. Well I just don't. Keep a loaf of "my" bread in the freezer and just get out one slice at a time for toast. The light Yoplait is only 90 to 100 ca. and a good treat.

But I have to share one sinful thing I found. sort of sinful. I bought an anglefood cake to have for a little desert with fresh strawberries. Well I ran onto this receipt. Slice off a couple pieces of cake. Then melt a teaspoonful of butter in a small skillet and brown the cake. Really!! Then make a cream cheese spread. I like cream cheese with tiny bit of vanilla and brown sugar. Makes a sort of carmel dip for apples. Was wonderful on the cake. So ya gotta try something new. Who wudda thunk!!

May The Bird of Happiness Fly Up Your Nose!!

The blue birds are back and checking out their old nest boxes. I just love them. Also the mocking birds are mating and looking for nesting places. Last year they nested in the grape vines and in the honeysuckle. I about drowned some babies when I was spraying Mircle Grow with the hose on the honeysuckle. Reminds me of the time I lived here before and I was fertilizing a flower bed with the miricle grow and noticed some movement and looked down and there was a nest of baby bunnies, all wet!! Didn't seem to hurt them, always wondered if they grew bigger than usual. You Think???

As promised here is an updated pic of Flossy and her Mommy, Jenny. I don't think I mentioned that when we had Jenny looked at by the ferrier in Jan when her feet got so sore from the ice that he looked her over and checked her teeth and told us he thought she was more like 20 to 25 years old, not the 15 that we were told when we bought her. So she is pretty old to still be having a baby, no wonder her back is so swayed. But she is so gentle and sweet. So is Milly her "12" year old daughter. hmmmm, wonder how old she really is?

Now Flossy is a little stinker and I hate to admit that I have not worked with her much. I have insisted that she wear a halter and I take ahold of it when I am out there and work with leading her. Mostly we have them to keep the grass down in the lot next to the house that is about an acre, saves us mowing it. But on impulse we bought this big horse at the same time and he eats all the time so we had to open a strip of the pasture up for them to graze. Still thinking about selling him. But he is such a sweety. Did anyone play the video I loaded here? Scroll down a way and see it.

Work on the house is progressing. I, {did you get that I?} drained the water heater this morning. The contractor guy is starting on the floor tile now. Going to pull the potty and try to get that corner all done today, I said I can do without hot water for a day or so but not the potty! Plan to get the bedroom painted this weekend, Carpet will be in by Wed. So that is coming together. Have the trim and new door in the garage, so need to prime and paint them.

Dog Whisperer

Since I am on a little roll about pets. Has anyone watched the Dog Whisperer? He is on the Natl Geo Channel.Awesome!! I love this show. Man, with a little hiss sound and snap of his fingers he has mean dogs under control. He stresses that dogs are dogs and not people. He actually trains people and rehabilitates dogs. That is his quote. Dogs that have a pack leader, PEOPLE, are happy dogs. They don't have anxiety and behave badly when they know who is the boss. And we really should not, NOT let the dogs be the boss.
{clears throat} Not that any of us do that, right? I just said recently that after 8 or 9 years now our dog has us about trained.

Its been real funny doing the chores alone. When hubby does them the dog goes everywhere with him and she gets to carry a glove back in her mouth and then gets a small treat. Well the weather is warmer now so no glove. Do you think she wants to go out to the barn with me? Only about half the time, when she wants to poop in the pasture! No glove, no treat, why bother? But fetching mail is still on the agenda. Fetch a piece of junk mail, get a treat, nice mommy.

In the picture of her above, you can see the boo-boo on her eye brow where the baby donkey, Flossy kicked her last fall. Flossy still chases her sometimes, but the dog has gotten smarter and runs to me for protection. The kicking up of the heels has about stopped as Flossy has gotten older. Will have to post a new pic of her. Does anyone know a Donkey Whisperer??

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
(That's why they call it "fur"niture .)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter
who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: In many ways, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

Eat less
Don't ask for money all the time
Are easier to train
Normally come when called
Never ask to drive the car
Don't hang out with drug-using friends
Don't smoke or drink
Don't have to buy the latest fashions
Don't want to wear your clothes
Don't need a "gazillion" dollars for college.

And finally,
If they get pregnant,you can sell their children :-)

Whew! Had to come to work to rest!

Below are 2 pictures of the projects going on. One is of the bathroom tile over the tub. Still a work in progress. Have a pro doing this job. The other is the adjoining bedroom. The red ribbons is to keep "little" brother from hitting his head on the light fixture, {again}. When we lived in this house before, about in 1990 to 93 we did alot of remodeling and we had this room paneled to cover old walls. Well the "brothers" who owned the house last wall papered it, and a crappy job if I do say so. Yes I do say so! Anyway before they papered they painted the ceiling and slopped paint on the paneling. I really didn't want to remove the paneling so I stripped off the old paper, ran caulk around the ceiling, patched all the holes and have one coat of primer on. I found the paint that I think will look great. It is called sandstone. IT is textured, like sand. I have the carpet squares ordered. Bro. is putting down the underlayment today. Went to Lowes yesterday and ordered the new vinyl windows for the bathroom and bedroom. Plan to get them all replaced thru out before the year is out. I ordered custom sizing so they should be easy to replace the old ones and not mess up the woodwork. Picked up the new BR vanity and medicine cabinet and light and floor tile. Whew! That was the fun part! Wish I were alot younger I would have gone to school and learned how to be a REAL carpenter!! Think I would have liked that better than nursing.

Oh, I changed my mind, {you know I am allowed to do that} The wall is staying between the little dressing room and the bedroom. Cost was a factor and I really like that little room with a small window in it. makes a nice place to iron. Going to just enclose the closet that is at one end of it. and tore out the little open closet thing that was at the other end. Will make a nice place to put hubby's desk.

So thats it for now. Going to put the last coat of primer on tonight and will have to make another trip to town to get the paint. Thought I could get it cheaper at Walmart but they only sell it in spray cans. Did you know that Walmarts paint is good stuff. Valspar and some other quality brand, They just package it under Walmart name. I have used it for years and now I know why I like it so much.

Ok now I am ready to get busy. Hubby always knows that when he leaves me alone I do something to tear up the house. At the present time I have the carpenter redoing the bathroom. Will post a before and after pic when he is done. Hubby knows I am going to tear wall paper off the bedroom and rip up the carpet, but,,,,,,,,, he doesn't know I am having windows replaced and move one wall!. See there is a big sort of dressing room at the end of the bedroom. By taking out the wall and putting a closet in across the back wall it will open the room up and it will be about 12X18. As we do work on an area we are taking out the old windows that we put in about 15 years ago and putting in vinyl ones, The metal frame ones drip all winter. I am headed out tomorrow to get the bathroom vanity. When we did the bathroom 15 years ago we put in all blue/gray fixtures,tub, sink and toilet. Am going with a nice clean white, and a pretty tile for the walls. I want to do the bedroom floor myself. Looking at the new 24in. carpet tiles. Think with a little coaching I can do that.

So have lots of work to do. Plus take care of the horse, donkeys, chickens, and dog. Gee piece of cake!!

Oh, didn't mention where hubby was going! Silly me. He is headed out to Nv. to help his sister with packing up. Then will fly back out middle of next mo. and be there to help her with the movers, then drive her back in her car. AGAIN.. We just did all this last year at this time. But she had to go back out to Nv. and try it on her own. She just wasn't ready to make that move yet. Lucky her house didn't sell here so she can just move right in. Have had a painter working in there doing some repainting of all the rooms for her and that will make her happy.

So there you go. Lets see where did I put the motrin??

OK, do I believe?

My last post triggered a question of my opinion on the topic of UFO's. I have read quite a few books on the subject, and I have to say that it is very compelling. I like to read books on the metaphysical and paranormal. Guess that's really 2 different subjects, but what I am getting at is that I keep an open mind. I really believe that the mental capacity that we use is so tiny compared to what we are meant to evolve to. So are there aliens helping us to evolve. I sort of like to think so. I think what makes be believe in UFO's is that we have to be very smug to think that this huge universe could only produce one intelligent species, come on! Our world is like a tiny grain of sand in the grand scheme of things.

So I keep an open mind and try to fill it with stuff and learn all I can in this life. Now as for the next life, that will have to be another post. Hint: Of course we have been here before and will be again.

Could UFO's realy save the world? See the story!

OTTAWA (AFP) - A former Canadian defense minister is demanding governments worldwide disclose and use secret alien technologies obtained in alleged UFO crashes to stem climate change, a local paper said Wednesday.

"I would like to see what (alien) technology there might be that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuels within a generation ... that could be a way to save our planet," Paul Hellyer, 83, told the Ottawa Citizen.

Alien spacecrafts would have traveled vast distances to reach Earth, and so must be equipped with advanced propulsion systems or used exceptional fuels, he told the newspaper.

Such alien technologies could offer humanity alternatives to fossil fuels, he said, pointing to the enigmatic 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico -- which has become a shrine for UFO believers -- as an example of alien contact.

"We need to persuade governments to come clean on what they know. Some of us suspect they know quite a lot, and it might be enough to save our planet if applied quickly enough," he said.

Hellyer became defense minister in former prime minister Lester Pearson's cabinet in 1963, and oversaw the controversial integration and unification of Canada's army, air force and navy into the Canadian Forces.

He shocked Canadians in September 2005 by announcing he once saw a UFO.

Darn Pushy Horse!

I wanted to share my row of birdhouses I made for gifts for our family reunion. I am using photobucket to add this picture. As you can see from the pictures, the little houses are decorated with license plates and recycled siding that I spray painted, and even the pepsi emblem that I cut from a can. Makes me want to get back to the saw and my favorite tool, the electric staple gun that shoots little 1 1/4 in brads. Great for these little projects. I don't recommend the foo foo stuff for the little porch if the house is to be used outside for real birds. My brother has had a family of house wrens live in his the last couple years right on his back porch. I like to collect birdhouses too. One of my favorite is in my store now, an oriole nest that the ice storm brought to the ground. It looks like the perfect little bird cradle. A fantastic creation of weaving of twigs, horse hair and even some fishing line. I will take a picture of it and post it soon. So now if I make some more birdhouses I plan to make little back doors on them so that I can open them and clean out for them. Have lots of bluebirds that nest in our yard.

Where did my tax refund go??

Lowes got alot of my income tax refund yesterday!! New bath tub, some purty tile for the walls, and accessories to go with the new wall, corner shelves and towel rod to be worked in with the tile and new faucet fixtures and a new hand held shower. Got a pretty tile that is sort of sand colored with little darker flecks and swirls, and the grout is a sand colored. (figured the soap scum wouldn't show up as bad)
When we get that all done will start on a new vanity and sink, not sure if we will continue the same tile for the counter or get a pre-made top. THEN after all that I hope to move on to the kitchen and do the counter with a new sink and faucets.
So there is my project list for this spring. I hope my carpenter will be speedier than when he did the breezeway. But he did an awesome job connecting the house to the garage with this big roof. Hubby says we should put a cross on top and hold services under there!!

Bro. came out yesterday and cut a nice hole in the closet floor and framed in a good access for working under the house. The previous access was this small opening from the outside that would only let a fairly small man to get thru there. You notice I said "man" I'm not going under there!!

Bro. and I are conspiring to do our own renovation while hubby is away in March. You know when the cat is away the mice will play. Going to move all the bedroom stuff out. So I can tear off all the wall paper and rip up the old carpet. Will have to put down new plywood flooring then I want to look at the new carpet squares for a do it yourself project. Anyone had any experience with them? Looks cool. Not the old peel and stick that they used to sell. Then I can take the old closet "shag" carpet out and continue the new stuff thru there. Oh, and hubby really doesn't care. He likes to let me do pretty much what I want with the house, just don't move his stuff around in the garage to much!!! Last time he was gone I sort of cleaned the garage and he claims he can't find stuff. Well just because you aren't tripping over it doesn't mean its not there somewhere.

Spring is on the way. I am ready to get out and dig in the dirt!!

There is no question about it, dear Aquarius, you have been working hard these last few weeks. As an approaching deadline looms, you may find yourself waking up at night, running numbers through your head and mentally rewriting project proposals. It's exhausting, to be sure, but know that the end result will make all this aggravation worthwhile.

Well since I just had my taxes done this week, I think this fits very well. Looks like I might be able to go ahead with remodeling my bathroom!!

SOLD, to the lady in the front row!

I just made my first E-Bay sale!! I listed it one week ago and the auction closed yesterday afternoon. I had put a min. bid of $1.00 on it, and on the second day I got a bid to cover my min. I thought "hey this is OK" No more bids till about 2 min. before my time closed and I got 6 bids and sold it for $3.28 plus the $3.12 for shipping and handling. Of course E-Bay will take a small cut of that but I was excited. Now I see my act. has been paid so will get the book wrapped up and kiss it good-by.

Well gotta run. Have a couple books I want to get listed today!!!

What is the Book Lady reading?

I finished 2 books yesterday. Woman on the Edge of Time was very interesting. Didn't end very clear so was a little disappointed in it. Then I finished A Dean Koontz book, The Face of Fear. A good read, not like his other books I have read, It was more like a real mystery with the bad guys chasing the good guys and you know who wins in the end, right? Still reading a Sara Davidson romance, Cowboy. It is my treadmill read for now. A silly romance that isn't bad.
Getting ready to start a Nicholas Evans book. I am sure I won't be disappointed as he is such a great writer. This one is The Divide. I still want to read The Horse Whisperer, I was told that the movie ended much different than the book, so have to read it and see. I caught the tail end of the movie on TV the other night. Oh, that Redford!!

My sister is trying to get me into quilting, I think I would like it and have done a little of it in the past. I could set up a table here in the store and sew between customers, but then how would I read all these books? But I would feel more productive if I did something other than read. So I am thinking I will give it a go. I have been collecting denim pieces for along time as I think I would like a quilt of denim with the seams on the outside all frayed. I saw one in Park City Utah one time that was just awesome. They had stitched pieces of jeans onto some of the blocks, like a belt loop, or pocket.

The weather is teasing us with a little warm up. So glad, as I am anxious to get out in the flower beds and sunshine. But keep the wood box full as it will get cold again I am sure.

Oh, one more thing, I sell my first book on e-bay today. I was surprised I got a bid on it right away. I am getting my feet wet in this areana. Have been ordering books for folks who don't want to do it themselves and I charge a small fee for handling that. It has been working pretty well. I think I have ordered 7 books in the last couple weeks. It is fun to help them find what they want if I don't have it. So I have been taking pictures of books this week so I can post a couple more on e-bay. Wish me luck.

It's a Dachshund, it's house broken, and it's great with kids.

He's giving it away because his wife says the dog 'stares' at her when she is undressing ,

and that gives her the 'Heebie Jeebies'. I think she is just weird !

My Prison Experience

A fellow blogger asked me to do a post about my experience in prison. Gotcha!!

Actually I am an RN and worked at a mens prison in Nv. for 7 years. It was definately the highlight of my 33 years of nursing. I worked OB most of the time, during the first10 to 15 years. I had my first experience with inmates while I worked at a Nv. hosp back about 1985. At that time the local prison had female inmates and when they would have a pregnant inmate they would deliver at our facility. Yes they did shackle them to the labor bed and the delivery table and an officer was placed outside the door. I remember thinking this was rather barbaric, where were they going when they were trying to push a baby out! But having worked on the "other side of the fence" so to speak, no literally, I can see the necessity. There has to be standards. I know now that inmates are classified with numbers that indicate their risk for violence, or an excape risk. This no. will indicate the level of security required. But to my knowledge when they are off the prison yard there is still a pretty high level for all.

Years later when I worked at the prison we did not have women there, but there was a period of time that we housed about 50 or so at one unit, temporarily. Well ended up being over a year. Since I was the "yard nurse". It fell to me to make rounds daily to that unit and answer complaints, do nursing assessments, and order treatment and care that I was allowed. Mostly all they wanted was laxatives and hormones. When they complained about pimples, I had to blow them off. Their presence took up about 2 hrs. of my time daily out of 8 hrs. that had already been very busy, doing sick call to the lock down units of a couple hundred men and the work camp that joined the main prison. I was so glad to see them all transfered elsewhere. Oh, I forgot after I did it for about 6 mo. they assigned a nurse to handle just the women, 8 hrs a day!! Well I didn't begrudge her the job. Women are the worse, whiney complaining critters.

I got to use my OB experience once with a gal who claimed to have her water break and no labor, so since I had experience they sent her to the clinic for me to see and examine. No one else there, even the dr. didn't know how to examine a laboring patient. Well she was really in labor with ruptured membranes and gross leakage, so it was a no brainer. BUT, See this is how one could plan an excape if not monitored, claim water broke, no labor, but would need to be sent to hosp, and maybe have a boyfriend waiting in the hall to wisk her off to a car and gone. So these are reasons that there has to be security measures.

Some of the women were in for crimes of violence, but a huge number of them were for drug related offenses, 1. theft to support habit 2. selling drugs 3. buying drugs 4. prostitution to earn money. Even in a state with legal prostitution, you can't just work on your own. Alot of the time the women are there because of bad boyfriends or husbands. The guys are the drug dealers and the women get sucked in and when arrests are made they go down with the guys. Did you know that if a member of your family is dealing illigal drugs out of your home, you stand to be arrested and jailed even if you didn't actually buy or sell. I am pretty sure I am right about that. Someone correct me if not.

Well long story, but that is my experience with women inmates. Now I will have to do another post or 2 about the men. They are a long story, or many stories. I rather enjoyed taking care of them, and never felt threatened,{well there was that one guy} I had something they wanted, medical care, which means medication!!

Happy Valentines Day to all,

I enjoyed my day off Monday, even though it was cold and rainy all day. At least we could be thankful that the rain was not freezing to ice. I headed out early and went to Ar. to spend the day with my favorite daughter and go book hunting. Both ventures were very successful! We had a good time even though she was coming straight off of working 12 hrs. Don't know how she does it. Guess at her age I was doing the same kind of thing. Glad I don't do that any more.
I came home with about 100 books to add to the store, so that was good.

Business is good some days and not so good others, but guess that's the way it goes. I still keep busy. Have opened an act. with Amazon and with E-Bay. Have several books listed on Amazon now and will get my feet wet with the other this week. I watched a set of 103 Louis L'Amour hardback leatherette books sell for over 400$ And another set of 109 books for over 500$. I have over 80 of them, I thought I would get them listed as soon as I am sure I know what I am doing. I don't usually deal in hardback books, but bought these up on a good deal from a young man wanting to unload them. And I have started ordering books from Amazon for customers and adding a couple dollars fee on for the service. Shoot I even got a box of candy bars and put on the counter to sell. Oh, and I got one of the real estate plastic boxes for flyers and put out by the front door and made up new flyers to keep in it.

Well best get back to the tax stuff. Wish me luck. dc

Just a reminder of summer:My Moon flowers

Bang head, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Do you ever feel that life is just alot of repetition? Last nite as I got into bed, as I had the dog move off the bed onto her own doggy bed, then snuggled down to put my feet in the nice warm spot that she left, I thought to myself that these little rituals repeat themselves over and over. It just seemed like I just did that same act a few minutes ago. Maybe its getting older that makes you aware of this. I don't remember thinking about this when I was young. Maybe our lives settle into to much routine as we get older. Guess that's it.

Maybe that is why my hubby always get excited and starts planning weeks ahead of time when he is planning a hunting trip or just a trip like the one coming up next month, to drive back to Nv. to help his sister get ready to move. Again!. Yes, if I hadn't mentioned it she is moving back here again. I sure hope it will work out for her this time as we just can't keep doing this. I am almost ashamed to say that it has been nice to have her so far away since last July. She does take up alot of my hubby's time and energy. But he has developed alot of patience with her the last couple years, that I sort of admire.

Well those are my thoughts for this Sat. See here it is Sat already, didn't we just do this already??

Whats in your Car?

After this incident with the female astronaut, I got to thinking, Whats in Your Car or Trunk?
If, God forbid you got arrested, what do you haul around in your vehicle that could look incriminating? You know innocent things like duct tape and a rope would look pretty bad. I do carry a small hunting knife in my console, along with some old aspirin, pill bottle full of quarters, plus who know what all else. You know you are never innocent till proven guilty anymore. Well at least I don't carry any pampers.

Donkey update, Our old girl with the sore feet is doing better. Still hurts me to watch her walk. But she goes out into the pasture every day, and the ground is softer now. The farrier came and checked her out and trimmed a little on the hooves, but thinks she just had sore "frogs". That is the part just under the front of the hoof that takes alot of pressure right up into the foot and leg bones. So we are just waiting and will see if she will heal up on her own. They were funny to watch them when it was so sunny in the afternoon, all four of them, the horse and 3 donkeys all flaked out in the pasture like they had all been shot, soaking up the sunshine. All were laying close to each other. We are thinking of selling the horse. He is just to expensive to feed to have him for just a pet. It was an emotional spur of the moment thing to buy him. He is such a sweetheart. I should try to post the video of him rooting hubby's pocket for horse treats.

By Golly I believe I have it! Man I am a slow learner, but this picture was taken on day 2 or 3 days of freezing sleet in Jan. There was a short break between storms. So glad it is all melted and gone. My critters say thanks too. Caught them all in the pasture yesterday and it looked like they had all been shot. Everyone was laying out flat soaking up the sunshine.

Reba, Reba

Anyone watch Reba's sitcom? I never saw it when it ran originally, but have gotten hooked on watching all the re-runs now and hate to miss it. I think she is great and sort of my role model. Wish I had her wit and sarcasm. Well maybe I do, but it never comes out when I want it, you know how you always think of the right thing to say about 2 in the morning?? For the most part, I find TV pretty worthless. I could live with out the 100+ channels. Heck you can't find anything to watch most of the time. I end up hitting the discovery channels to see whats on. Some times I think people carry on about alot of the shows just to be part of the crowd.

Well I can now post my pictures thru photobucket, just have to figure out how to have them be a part of my post and not separate like this last pic. of Flossy.
Oh, Flossy is learning to Hee Haw, I have heard her twice now. Her mommy has really sore feet from walking on all the ice and frozen snow, and I caught Flossy trying to coax her to come out in the field with her Sun. We were out trimming big tree limbs in their small pasture next to the house. What a mess. We will be all spring getting all the limbs hauled to where we can burn them. I wish my back would hold up and let me just stay out there all day. I love it. I am a great brush stacker!

Well the sun is shining today and it is nice and warm, like around 60 or more. I like that!!

Well, what is the book store lady reading today. At home I am reading a James Michener book. Journey: it is about the Gold fever of 1897 in Canada at the Klondike gold fields. Its about 4 English aristocrats and their journey across Canada to reach the gold fields. True to Michener's style it is a very vivid novel.

At the store I am reading a very different book. Woman on the Edge of Time, by Marge Piercy, it caught my eye because it involves visitors from the future, 2137. The main character is a hispanic, very poor woman who has had the worse that life can heap on her and while in a mental institution she is mentally transported to this future world. She is actually very sane but caught up in this whole system of the mentally insane. Very interesting read.

OK, I do believe I have it!

I deleted the huge picture and figured out how to make it the right size, Yea, for me. Cold, cold, cold today. But sun is shining and I survived the big birthday, so life is good.

Been working hard on eating better, so that is my goal for my life now. I am avoiding all processed stuff and white stuff. Eating whole grains, fruits and veggies. Breakfast is a small bowel of Old fashioned oats,(looks like horse oats) with 2 tlb ground flax and 6 olmonds, ground also, with soy milk and equal. That has become my staple to start the day. I should add some fruit yet I believe. Will try adding some frozen blueberries or strawberries. I am trying to eat every 3 to 4 hours. so I make either a protein shake and put in my thermal cup, or scramble 3 egg whites with 2 yolk, and that is my snack for late morning, then a salad with tuna or left over meat about 1pm. Then veggie, salad, and grilled meat for supper. I throw in a yogurt somewhere in afternoon or evening. Been drinking lots more water and less coffee, and cut the ice tea, Have at least one cup of green tea. So it looks like I am eating all the time, I don't get hungry. And I feel good about it. Hubby informed me we are eating out tonite, so I will just have the chicken salad, and a cup of yogurt when I get home with a hot cup of green tea. Also been faithful on the treadmill every morning, or at least 5 times a week.

So that is my anti-aging battle plan. At this stage I am more worried about my health. I have tried other eating plans over the years to try to lose a few pounds but this feels right to me and a better way to eat. It is not called a diet. Just a better way to eat healthy. I took alot of my plan from Bob Green's book. He is the diet guy on Oprah. It is just being more sensible on choices.

Now Just how sweet is this? I can always count on a beautiful card from my hubby. He comes from the generation of men that find it hard to express how they feel sometimes, so his cards always express how he feels in his heart even though he may not say alot of things out loud. We always know when we are loved. :)

Is it just ME?

I just tried to upload one of my own pictures and it just doesn't work. The one from the last post that uploaded OK was a picture I imported from the net and had it stored with my pictures. Now if loaded, why won't my pictures load? I even opened a new blog on Wordpress and it wouldn't let me import my files from the New Blogger. So that didn't work. I do have another blog site in My Spaces and I can post pictures on it. But not sure I want to keep up 2 blog sites. And I really like this one and have been posting for a LONG time. Darn. Well I will stop complaining. Yea, like that will happen right?

Had a good weekend, hubby took me out for a great sea food lunch Sun for my birthday, which isn't till later this week. Went shopping and ended up buying a new cook stove, with alot of neat bells and whistles. On Mon. we hauled more hay for our 4 legged friends, (that I can't post pictures of) Hubby trying to get me stocked up on stuff as he will be taking a trip in about 4 to 6 weeks. Seems his older sister is moving back to Mo. again. If you read me much you know that when we moved here last year, we moved her also. She is a widow and it was just to soon after her husband died for her to make that big of a move, She was here only a couple months and hubby moved her back to Nevada. Now that she has been alone since last Aug, she realizes we are her only family and she knows she needs to be closer to us. So her house here hasn't sold yet and she will move back into it for now. Probably look at moving her at least one more time if she finds a senior park somewhere that she would like that is close and takes care of the lawn and is just for seniors. Sort of a gated community. You know thats where us baby boomers need to be investing our money. Building these senior communities. When we get to be 80 we aren't going to want to live in neighborhoods with kids running around. Besides no yard work will give us freedom to travel and chase the young guys.
