Meet Rocky

Can you see him in the scaffolling. The beams are for the breezeway that is being built. In the mornings the chickens think this is a jungle gym for them to play on. Rocky got up there and crowed for along time. Oh, the pleasures of country life. dc FYI you have to look read hard to see him in the one picture.

Could this really be true? My horoscope for today

You'll be going along nicely today, singing your own song and delighting in the antics of all the people around you. Suddenly, everyone is witty and charming. Before the day is over, you'll be asking yourself why there's no reality-TV show based on your life. There's nothing holding you back, and there's little if anything for you to worry about. You've reached the point of least resistance with someone new -- they just may be coming around to your way of thinking

OK

what does a rabbit, a cat, an opposum, and 2 armadillos have in common?

Road Kill noted on the 3 miles from my house to the store this morning.
A bit of info I thought was important! Business doing good, hubby got home,
life is good. dc

Hummers

As mentioned in last post, here are the hummers drinking from the oriole feeder. They are quite the friendly little fellers.

Just a little piece of heaven

I still have to pinch myself when I pull in the gate to our place. Can't believe we were able to buy our little farm back after 10 years. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't go home. Everything we do now is for keeps on this place. Have a carpenter working now building a breeze way between the house and garage, and it will cover the deck too. That will make the deck so much more accessable. It will be open to the so. and no. so will still get a nice breeze thru it. My bro. says it should look like a picnic shelter! Well thanks alot. Doing it in cedar, having the house and garage reroofed at the same time. Think I will add one more picture of my hummers. I have 2 feeders, actually the one in the pic is an oreole feeder but the hummers don't care. I have to fill them every morning as they empty them daily. Hubby will be home Sun. Gosh I almost got used to him being gone, almost 4 weeks, will have to get adjusted to having someone else in the house. But he can sure take over the lawn mowing again, thats for sure. It will be good to have him home safe and sound. This is a crazy world we live in and we need to appriciate every day. Oh, the store is doing OK. Been so hot, that I think alot of people are just staying in where its cool. I let a guy bring his big dog in the other day. He pulled up right in front and had a big, overweight, golden lab hanging out the window. I said, why don't you bring the dog in, and he was so glad, said she was a good girl and she was. The other local little county paper had a little write up this week on me. The lady mayor has a collumn that she writes and I went to her last week and thanked her for sending a customer to me and she said, well I think I need to make mention of your store in the paper, and she did. Hey I will take all the free advertizement I can get. Had the young guy back today to go thru my old classic books and found some Steinbecks. So there is something for everyone. Did my biggest sale this morning. An older lady bought 45$ of western romance, and that was after her trade in of 16$ worth of books that I gave her credit for. This is so much fun!! Oh, went to Ark. on my days off to visit grand daughters and 3 managed to get smuggled back to the farm to stay all night, I was afraid they would start thinking they were to old for that. The oldest one is 17 and she even opted to come stay with Grandma over spending time with boyfriend who had a day off on Mon. Yea, here's to grandma power. Actually she was the one who begged to come. We had a great time, made bacon, tomatoe, sandwiches, and played scrabble till 11;00. Ok I am done now. dc

Tagged by addict

Here’s the deal:Once you have been tagged, you have to write a post with 8 facts/things/habits about yourself and say who tagged you. In the end, you will need to choose the 6 people you tag and list their names (except I don’t tag, so 6 of you will have to claim it, leave a comment so we know to check you out!). No tag backs.

1: I hate to have anything wooden on my tongue, like popsicle sticks or wooden spoons. Have to turn my head if I let the dog lick the popsicle stick. Sort of like running your nails down a blackboard.

2. I had and eyelid lift and tummy tuck with in one year. That would be a little over 2 years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself.

3. I walk around doing other things while brushing my teeth, sometimes things like getting into the shower or getting dressed.

4. I tend to be gullible, is that spelled right? I seem to always believe what ever people tell me.
There were some whoppers I was told as a kid that I found out later were not true. I still have a hard time sorting out the "whoppers".

5. I once stuck my tongue on a frozen pump handle and peeled a layer of skin off trying to get my tongue unstuck.

6. I almost drowned in the Des Moines river when I was a kid. At least I thought I was drowning at the time.

7. I believe in reincarnation, and would someday to have a life reading done. There are so many things that makes be believe this. The soul knows!

8. I don't {well rarely} swear. Haven't figured this one out yet. It is not that I didn't hear enough of it growing up. It is just hard for me to let those words come out of my mouth. Must be some psycolological thing here. Any ideas?

So there are my 8. Anyone else want to add their 8, jump in here. Thanks dc

Thought for the day

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.

Robert Louis Stevenson

The world has no room for cowards,
We must all be ready somehow to toil, to suffer, to die.
And yours is not the less noble because no drum beats before you when you go out to your daily battlefields, and no crowds shout your coming when you return from your daily victory and defeat.

Loving my doggy

This is my big baby, she has been so good this past week while I baby sat my brothers little dog. Since she is a red heeler, she likes to direct him around. He is a little black dog. She is getting older and likes her chair in the living room with the airconditioner going. dc

Like finding a bait shop in Harlem!

Thats what a young man told me yesterday when he went thru my collection of old classic books. He ended up buying about 10 of them. Who knew? This is just turning out to be tooooo much fun. Had a very good day yesterday and a very slow day on Wed. This morning had a gal waiting on the doorstep for me to open. So maybe it will be a good day. Heck everyday is a good day!! Did anyone see the story on Good Morning America this week about the Indigo Children. I found it facinating and went to the net to check out and found a great site that has lots of links for even more info. Check out this http://skepdic.com/indigo.html It mentions a book called The Indigo Children by Lee Carroll that was directed by his channeler named Kryon. Looks like some real interesting stuff. Well you can see where I spend my time when things are slow? Looks like I may have a very interesting weekend, having a visitor to spend the weekend that I haven't seen in 10 years. Everyone have a good one too. dc

Business is booming, well maybe

It is 10:00 Fri AM and have 2 customers already!! Coffee is brewing, Ray Lynch playing mellow music on the computer, life is good. Only had one customer all day yesterday, First couple days open had several lookers and made a couple sales each day. Not worried, still trying to alpha everything. Working on the science fiction now. Did the westerns yesterday, seem to be alot of western readers here, I didn't think I needed to alpha them till the very first guy that came in looking for one special author made me realize that everything has to be in alpha order. Keeping busy at home with hubby out of town. Lawn needs mowing, to cool off this weekend so that will be good. We have 5 little banty chickens now, about half grown, the rooster just started crowing last week. Have to compete with them for the tomatoes, but guess they can eat a few. They sure run around picking up bugs, Saw a pair of groundhogs in the pasture next to the house so the shotgun is sitting handy. Don't want them up in the yard, They dig such huge holes where ever they decide to. Sorry to all the groundhog lovers, The world will have to do without a few if they are on our place. Well got to go read the local paper, should take about 5 min. My article should come out next Tue. Will copy and post it here. dc

Open for business

Well I am ready, I already drug in the first customer who saw me putting up my open sign and he was at the garage next door, so he came in and checked out my policy plan, was friendly and left. So its OK, I didn't expect to have them lined up today. Took some pictures, as you can see the shelves have some bare spots so in a few days I will go back to the books I culled out and stored and bring some more in. Actually I like it not so crowded and it gives me room to put up books that I take in. So will have to wait and see how it goes. Wish me luck, Addict, I may take a nap on the floor after awhile.

Opening the 17th, for sure, for sure!

I really mean it this time. And I will be ready, still getting the books alpha, by author now. And have some of the old wooden floor left to scrub and wax. It is the orig. bar floor, was able to save about half of the flooring. Got the blinds and curtains and adding a couple plants and pictures. Sort of like nesting. Hubby will leave Tue to deliver his sis back to Nv. What a time to be traveling across the deserts. Guess I never mentioned we got a new vehicle just before we moved. It is a Toyota FJ Cruiser. Bright blue with white top. Really cool looking. We get lots of comments by folks when we travel. Some even ask to sit in it. So he is driving it and they are sending her car by a car carrier, which is being picked up today. She has an 89 Crown Victoria that has less than 30,000 miles on it and still looks new. Well got to get to this floor. Hot here. Love the air conditioner. dc

My new life in books,

Here is a peak of what things are looking like. Don't you love my shopping cart. Went to Dollar General Store and asked if I could buy one of their old carts out back and I got it for 5$ A little spray paint and it works wonderful. I am using bird houses for my decorations. Will put a bird nest in the chinmey hole. The curtains have birdhouses on them. Still need to put up the miniblinds and curtains. Can't you see I am wired for this!!! An just so thrilled to have the opportunity to do this, and to think this will be my JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REALITY CHECK HERE

So OK you can't organize 10,000 books in a couple days. Who knew?
Actually there have been some serious stuff going on with this family, both sisters with major health issues and now a greatnephew is critically ill, so you know things sort of came into perspective for me today and I said to myself, "self, what are you knocking yourself out for?"
So it may take a few days longer. My bro and his girlfriend were just here and bless their hearts hauled all the "extra" books over to store in my sisters house. There was a whole pickup load. NOW I can see some progress and can start to get organized. I was feeling so swamped. I have thrown several hundred books in the dumpster and have a few boxes in the corner that will most likely end up the same way. Not going to store anymore. My gut feeling is that after I am open awhile and take in books for resale I will never open one of those boxes and they will go to the dump too. Hate to throw out books, but 25 John Gresham's The Firm is just to much!! And tons of the old romance novel, you know the kind, with the guy half dressed and muscles bulging and a damsel with her bosom hanging out and hair to her waist looking wistfully at him, half of them have Lust as part of the title. But I want bright newer books and when the shelves are full and I have room I will pull out some of them. Will be interesting to see what kind of books folks here read. Probably all the Lust for Life type, ha ha
Well headed home early, only about 6 pm. Oh, while I am writing a novel here I will add that hubby is headed back to Nv. in one week. His sis did not like Mo. and refuses to stay here and has bought another house in Nv. again to be back where she is familiar with things. Shelfish us, we thought she would be happy to just live near us. Hubby is the only family she has and she is 82, just can't see what this is going to do to my hubby, This is his only sister and only family left to him. So now he will have to make trips back and forth to check on her and over see her going to an assisted living one day when she can't live alone. Oh, don't get me started. On one hand I am so mad and on the other I can understand her. Well we all make choices in life and have to live with them. So thats my story for now. dc

Open July 11

Ever try to put 10,000 books in alphabetic order???? Help. But plan to open Tue. So will sleep here if I have to. Still haven't practiced with the cash register. Better do that by Mo. Have a gal at city hall who said she would help me. Well back to pricing and stacking. Will add pictures later of my cute counter, bro. helped me build and my small blue shopping cart I bought from Dollar General and painted, for $5.!!
Here is the newest picture with the flower box. Wish me luck..

new picture taken today!!!

Only thing missing is the flower box. Yea, got another set of double shelves done today and some counter top up in the kitchen/office.

Before picture

Guess I should give you a before picture so you can see what the building looked like. This was taken about a month after I bought the building and had already had the new roof put on.
We litterly gutted the inside down to the studs and put in new wiring and plumbing. Thats why it has taken so long. dc

MY Store

Well here is the {almost} finished store. Still need the store sign to be put up and will do that today. About 3 more days building shelves. Then a few days putting books on them. Will be glad to have all the sawdust over with. But have loved every minute of this. Oh, also have a flower box to go out front tomorrow and have the flag mounted on the right corner. Will do another picture later plus some of the renovation in progress, and the finished product. That alley way beside the store, carries all the traffic from the bank drive thru that is on main street. I couldn't believe all the traffic that comes thru there. There is a parking lot just to the right of my little red truck and a small amount of parking in the front. Well got to go and get some paint slapped on some more shelving before my helper comes at noon and we can get some more shelves up. Lots of other personal news but will save that for later too. dc

MOVIN ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We will be closing out our internet/cable service on Mon the 27th so time is short to leave my last blog for awhile. The town we are moving to has one of the few private phone companies and you have to use their internet service, so will be changing everything over in a couple weeks.

The time is flying by like a whirlwind. So much detail to attend to. Didn't seem this hard last time we moved. hmm, could it be we are 10 years older?

Did the garage sale thing Fri, got rained out today so will try again on Sun as it is to clear out. One minute is raining, then snow flurries, then the wind blowing real hard. So got alot of packing done today. It is coming together, but hard work. Picked up taxes today, Very good news, I was hoping for a nice refund since I had to pay last year.

So this is it from this end for awhile. I will look forward to checking in as soon as I get back on line. I will miss all my blogger buddies. After Tue, no more "working for the man". Oh, I will be the "man".... whoa, what a thought.

Retirement Party, who Me??

Well I guess I have to go thru with it and retire now, since they threw me a party tonite!!
Am adding a picture of the cake, A little play on my first name, like in the Wizard of Oz. If you click on the pic. you can read the card. On the inside it said "All you need is a pair of red slippers and a fiesty little dog" So they found the slippers and a little plastic dog to add to the cake, Cute.

My favorite card came from the Dr. that I have worked with for all this time, She is a real gem, she gave me a gift sack of wine, a book, bath salts, a bag of gold coins{candy} and a package of Henna Tattoo kit. Looks interesting. The front of her card is a beautiful red rose with lots of dew drops, on the front it says "QUALITY,
Countless, unseen details are often the only difference between mediocre and magnificent."
On the inside she wrote, " I will miss the fact that I'm losing one of my most pleasant, sane, and competent nurse. Then she quoted Eleonor Roosevelt:"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Pretty awsome huh? At the bottom she wrote"All my best wishes for your health, happiness, highpoints, humor, habitat, handicrafts, harvests, heathenism and all the other hot H's".

I still have to pinch myself to believe that I am really doing this. Where did this streak of adventure and no fear of the unknown come from. Where ever, I love it and embrace it and I am READY.

Just as it should be

I just love it when things fall into place, just as they should. Sister in law, accepted an offer on her house yesterday with closing the end of April. Which willl give us just enough time to get moved and hubby fly back and help her with her moving details. She will use a moving co. to do the major moving and hubby will drive her and her 2 pups back. She will take posession of her house in Mo. just before she gets moved in so I can see to getting the carpets cleaned and ready for her.

All is sailing along here, I am orienting my replacement, which is usually unheard of with a state job. So I am sort of laying back my last couple weeks and letting her do most of the work. Heck how else is she supposed to learn!! They are throwing a retirement party for me Sun afternoon. So that should be nice.

Still very cold here, and treats of more snow flurries, so we are waiting till the last week to do the moving sale. Wish us luck to have decent weather.

So that is my update. Getting all my addresses changed, Anyone who wants my new address and phone no. in Mo. can e-mail me and will pass it along.

Will of course have to change internet servers after Mar. 31 so I will notify folks of that. So its off to work, well sort of work, ha ha.

OH, don't think I mentioned I bought 6,000 books while in Mo. for 5 cents a book. A leap of faith as I only looked in a few boxes, but think it going to be OK> I got alot of painting done while there and the house cleaned, wood floors waxed and all the donated stuff cleared out. So it is ready to move into. Can't wait.

Don't Whine

This is a poem by unknown author that was at the end of a chapter of the book I am reading.

Today I saw a lovely girl with golden hair,
envied her and wished I were so fair.
When she rose to go, she hobbled down the aisle,
She had one leg, wore a crutch and a smile.
Oh God forgive me when I whine
I have two legs, the world is mine.

Then I stopped to buy some sweets.
The lad who sold them had such charm.
I talked with him---my being late was no harm,
As I left he said to me, "You've been so kind.
You see," he said, "I am blind."
Oh God forgive me when I whine
I have two eyes, the world is mine.

Later, I saw a child with eys of blue.
Watching others play, not knowing what to do.
"Why don't you join the others, dear."
He stared ahead, he could not hear.
Oh God forgive me when I whine......

Baby its cold outside

Well dang, home one day and look what we got up to this morning. Those are quail swarming under the bird feeder. Taken from my kitchen window. more snow tonite too. And bro just told me it is 70 degrees back there in Mo. 3 more weeks and I am out of here for good. Yea for me.

Only in a small town

I am back in Mo. for a couple weeks, and only in a small town could you do some of the things I have done this week. Like go to the telephone co. and and they still had a card on me from when I lived there 9 years ago that so they did not need a letter of credit from my current phone co. I am talking about a little 3X5 card!! And when I went to post office all they needed was our name and the address on a little slip of paper to start mail delivery. I was thrilled the next day when I got junk mail in the mail box. I opened up our bank accounts and the bank president came out and gave me a big hug and wanted to know how soon we would be moved there permanently. So small town is good. Of course the internet service sucks. This little town has one of the few local phone companies, family owned and they have the only phone service so the internet service is thru them or you don't have one. So much for getting a good deal. But won't complain. At least they have it, right? So I am on my daughters computer in Ar. Having a great get together with her and her best friend. What a pair. So had to check up on everyone and say hi. Got to head back to the farm tomorrow and get busy with the paint brush, and go shopping for doors and windows for the store. Oh, also found someone who wants to sell me 6,000 books. How about that, when I talked to him he said alot of them are brand new and can buy them for 5 cents a book. Well thats it for now. Won't be home till the 8th of Mar. Then serious packing and will be moving back here on the 1st of April. dc

1973-74

As I look at retiring from 33 years of nursing I wanted to reflect back on how I got into nursing and what that 1st year of training was like. Back in 1971-72 I was working in a little boarding home. I worked some nites and some pm's. Mostly I was an attendant as this was not a nursing home and I cooked meals and was sort of the caretaker during my shift. There was about 15 female patients there and had to be able to care for themselves. The gal, Lois, who ran the home was going to school to get her LPN license. So when I would come to work at 11pm she would be sitting there with her books out and we'd talk. She encouraged me to look into a scholorship and going to school too. I guess I was put in that one place at the right time because I'm sure I would never have thought to go ahead with nursing without her encouragement. I certainly had never had any great desire for this or any career. My first husband and I with 2 small children had bought 5 acres and put our mobile home on it. we had no running water for about 6 mo. till we could get a well drilled. So everyday I'd take all these gal. jugs into town to my mothers and use a hose and fill them all. When we took baths{one after the other} the water was used to flush the toilet. We had a long driveway thru the woods and till we could get it graveled there were many days it was to muddy to drive thru so we used the kids wagon and pulled it thru the trees with the water jugs. I got a job at a nursing home as an aide and worked nites on Fri and Sat so I could have gas money for the next week to go to school. At this time my daughter was starting kindergaren {BTW the year she graduated from highschool I also graduated again with RN degree} But I'm getting ahead of myself.

This year 73-74 I spent 12 mo. going to school for my LPN license. I did get the grant to pay for tuition and books. For clinical we wore white pinafores and blue blouses. I had this short stout New England instructor, Mrs. Johnson who was a real gem. I remember her riding in an elevator at the hosp. with me and she was eye level with my ears and she said "what's that in your ear?" Rhinestone ear rings. They had to go! Pinafore length and graduation uniform had to be exactly midknee.

A couple weeks before graduation {I was 3rd in the class} I was told that I should not have been allowed to attend class because I was a high school drop out and only had a certificate from a correspondance school. So I had to go to the Deans office the very next day and take the GED test, whick I passed OK.

These 12 mo. were very hard to get thru, with family, work, and study. My son was quite taken with learning medical terminology, he was about 8. I remember him getting stung by a wasp and telling people he got stung on his clavicle.
So I graduated in May and started to work right away as a new grad at something like 3.75$ per hr. I worked in a small very rural hospital which was very good to get some early experience. A year later I transfered to a "real" hospital in a bigger town about 15 miles away. It was here that I learned my OB skills.

So looking back, I wish I could thank my mother for her help with taking care of my daughter in the AM's and getting her to her afternoon kindergarten class. {And to thank Lois for her encouragement.} Then both kids would ride the bus home and one of us would be home. I think the scarriest time was that 1st year of working nites, Husb #1 had to leave for work about 45 min before I would get home so the kids were left alone during that time trying to get ready for school till I got there to see them off to the bus!. Now I'd be arrested for child neglect. They were about 7&9. But they never burned down the huse. I wonder if they remember anything about that year.

So now all these years later I will hang up my nursing "hat" and be a storekeep for FUN. Wish me luck

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Don't know if you can read this if you click on the picture to make it larger. Was in today's paper. I will quote some of the lady's comments about this baby. Apparently the foal was born and the stallion of the small band of about 6 mares herded them away leaving the new born in very cold temp. Some people spotted him and when they didn't return reported the cold baby. This lady takes in abandoned animals for a refuge, called Lucky Horse Rescue Corral. she said "I have been in on a lot of rescues, but this one was the greatest". "I love mustangs, I think they're a gift from God to us here in Nevada, and we're kind of pushing them out". She has raised about 10 foals in her bedroom. This baby was named Heidi-ho because her unusual horse sounds were kind of like a little yodel. She will be adopted out when she gets a little older. "she is my very first baby that actually uses a bottle, most go from the turkey baster to the bucket" "When God puts something in front of you. it's your responsibility to take care of that baby" What a lady. Makes you want to go out and do something nice doesn't it???

5 K walk

Beautiful day today!! I joined hundred more to walk on the new Freeway, well we have a part of a freeway, ha ha. It links in on the north end of the city and there is about 6 miles completed and will open to traffic next week. It will take about 4 more years to complete the rest that circles to the east of the city and comes out at the south end to link back to the highway.

It was fun to see all the different people who came out today. Everything from babies in strollers and wagons to bikes, joggers, a unicycle, and one old gentleman with his little elec. scooter. And lots of dogs of all kinds. What I was surprised by was the calm and peacefulness even with this many people. It was 10K in all {over 6 miles} But they had a turn around at the 5 K mark and I opted to take it and head back. Took a few pictures and will post a couple of them here. Oh, I overheard the cutiest conversation between several senior citizen women. One was saying she had just had her bone density done, and it showed she had osteopenea. Then she laughed and said they should name a coctail for older women with that name. You know belly up to the bar and ask for an osteopenea, with extra shot of vit D and Calcium.

Hey Toots wish you could have been here! Missed a walking buddy.

I'm So Mad

I was accused of taking a winter break along with alot of other people, but reallly have been busy. Now what I am mad about, last week this creep of an inmate, asked me for my last name and when I asked him why, he said" because I am turning you into the state board of nursing". I asked him why and he said something about my lack of concern for his health and wellbeing, About that time Pat picked up on what was going on and she lit into him and told me not to say a word to him. I was upset and left a message on my bosses voice mail. The next day I guess Pat asked him did he really file a complaint and he said he had mailed it. She told him that he had made a big mistake because I was one of the few nursed there who did care and followed up on concerns and questions, ect. I was off that next day, but when I went in on Thurs I talked to my boss and he said yes the inmate had talked to him the day before and that I shouldn't worry that "they never win a case" About wanted to go bolistic on him. I said What case? there should NOT be a case. He should have shut him down right then. I was so mad at the boss not the idiot inmate, they are always trying to stir up trouble. But I feel my boss really let me down. Of course anyone can file a complaint. But with a spotless 35 year record, I am furious that this is happening. 6 more weeks and I am out and done. Now I am hoping that this inmate is just blowing smoke and didn't really file anything and he has no proof that I have done anything wrong. I only give him his meds, delivered to the unit in the evening. He is in the long term unit and there are about 15 {lame and lazy} ones that we deliver to. He is just a dirty old coot, who won't show up in the AM pill call line for his morning meds most of the time, and frequently doesn't come out of his room in the evening even though we come to the unit. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRr! Give me strength to not kill the bugger!!

So now I have vented and still don't feel much better about it. Just stinks, right?

Have been so busy on final details on the sale of the house, inspections, papers signed ect. Then I have been packing alot too. Trying to help the sister in law, she bought a house in the nearby town where we are moving in Mo. But still no nibbles on her house here. One day she is gung ho to move and the next day she thinks she should stay here. Poor thing at her age, maybe we are asking to much to expect her to move too, but she can't stay here alone with no family. She is very dependant on AC for more than she realizes I think. But I know it will all work out in the end. They are getting her house on the multiple listing tomorrow and taking more pictures, my thinking is that should have been done a mo. ago. hmm.

OK so there is a nice long post. I know a few others who owe us a "long" post. dc

Hello!!!

Is everyone taking a winter blog break? Seems like everyone is hybernating. Come on, what gives. I know there are fun and exciting things going on somewhere. Here it is cold. But then it is January. Been busy packing stuff. Ever notice how much *stuff* you have? Didn't George Carlin do a whole skit about our *stuff*. Geez some of the stuff I have packed I haven't used since last time I moved. Why do we hang on to all this stuff. I have numerous craft projects that were started and never finished. Mind you I do finish some things but I think the oldest saved unfinished project are some quilt blocks made by hand in what is called the cathedral pattern. I made them in 1974 and never put them together. Have enough to probably make a twin spread. Now tell me if I haven't finished it by now, what are the odds of it ever being done? I have a sister who quilts, maybe I should pass it on to her.

Well don't know how I got off on that little tangent. But hope I see some happy blogging soon or I will threaten to go on a winter strike too.

My Keepsake

This is a painting done by one of the inmates at the prison. He is a lifer and confined to his room and has taught himself to paint He turns out a painting about every 2 weeks and they are always bought up by staff and he donates several a year to the cancer walk. This guy is on a 30 by 36 canvas. Don't know if it does justice here but the shadows are great and you can see his breath, coming up over his nose and across his back. Pretty cool huh? Oh I forgot to mention that I bought it.

May I brag just a wee bit?

The name is smudged to protect the innocent. I received this little award yesterday from work. Was a nice honor. The boss who presented it must have been watching to many infomercials, because he said I was one employee that could be "set it and forget it" Not sure but think he ment it as a compliment. Actually the joke is on him as he hardly knows what I do. But as you can see from my last post I am not sure I should have gotten this, maybe is is my going away present.
Oh, and to top it off, I took today off as a sick day, ohhh, bad girl.

Pogonip

If you live where you don't get this, you are missing out on something beautiful and dangerous. Pogonip is frozen fog. I believe the name came from an Indian word. We seem to get it alot in January here, the fog forms in the valley and by morning this is what we see on everything. Maybe you can click on the picture and see it in more detail. Another name for it is hoary frost.

I wanted to mention for all you baby boomer gals out there be sure to read the Parade mag. in the Sun. paper today. Great feature article on us. The New Seasoned Woman. Yea, thats us. "She can be anyone who commits herself to living fully and with passion." Great article. Please read.

Where was I

Since my baby girl just had a birthday {no. 38!} I thought I would look back to see where I was at the age 38. First of all I want everyone to know I must have been only 12 when she was born, if I remember correctly, ha ha. That would have been the year that this baby girl graduated from high school and that I graduated from college with my associate degree in nursing. I had been an LPN for about 14 years by then. I had been remarried for about 4 years to AC. I was working in OB at Carson Tahoe Hospital. That was also about the time that I applied to get into the Army Reserves and went thru all the testing but got turned down because the college didn't have their National League of Nursing Accredidation yet. We had just moved from a rental house that year and bought a home. We had a tent camper and a brittney spanial named Belle, and we went camping and fishing real often. There are some things I would change if I could but mostly it was a good year with alot going on in my life.

I expect that baby girl will look back on the year she turned 38 and remember it to be a year of incredible changes in her life. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABY GIRL.

Big Flood!

We welcomed in the new year with more rain in one day than we get in a whole year!! Between 4 to 6 inches. Lots of flooding, driveways washed out, cars underwater down town, and major mudslides. I ventured out today, and took SIL out to lunch, we were getting cabin fever. The parking lot for a shopping mall on the main highway thru town looked like a mud ralley had taken place. They had big endloaders and dump trucks trying to clear the mess. I can see the carson river from my back door and I have never seen it before from here. I understand I 80 over the mountains west is closed for a few more days due to a huge mud slide. I think alot of the mud that ran thru town was from the area that burned down on the side of the mountain about 1/12 year ago. The picture is taken from my front porch, looking at the corner where water from a small creek had overflowed and took out a guys driveway and washed down over the street to re-enter the creek just east of our place.

AC is in Mo. at the present and I have killer dog here with me for protection. But when the wind is blowing very hard I am not sure who is protecting who. He checked out a house for his sister to buy and she made an offer on it. So we will both have homes now to go to when we get sold out here. I have been a very busy girl. Doing touch up painting and major cleaning. Meg I know why you move so often. It is a good way to clean house!!! Using the 3rd bedroom as storage room so all the packed up boxes are going in there. {and all the books that I got prices and boxed up} Well I am on a countdown with my list of stuff to get done before the realitor comes on Tue. So better get a few more things done tonite.

end of the year reflections

I was watching the evening news tonite, something I rarely do since I work evening shift, but was a bad girl and called in sick today. Anyway that is another story. But you know how at the end of the year they always show all the important people who have died the past year. As I watched all those familiar faces go by it really made be feel sad. There was the last one, Peter Jennings, so smart, so talented, so loved, and he is gone. But with the celebrities they are not really gone because we continue to see their movies and listen to their music. I guess it just makes me realize how fragil life as we know it is. We take so much for granted and live our lives as if they will go on forever. Maybe my wish for the new year for everyone is to slow down, really enjoy your lives, resolve old resentments, find beauty around you in the simple things, and take care of yourselves and each other. I like the saying, "don't sweat the small stuff, everything is small stuff." That is so true. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Just Breath

Do you ever feel like things are happening so fast you can't catch your breath? That is sort of how I feel lately. As you know we are getting ready for me to retire from nursing and start a little business as a semi retirement till I actually get *old*. Last week we got several large pieces of furniture moved out to store at SIL's extra garage. So everything is upside down with packing stuff that is not needed, have to do some touch up painting, rearrange furniture, and clean house before next Tue. when we list our home for sale. Yikes, we are really doing this. Like we never moved before. Lets see in past 23 years of marriage, we have moved 8 times. Now this will make 9. Hubby is in Mo. setting up a deal on a home for his sister, as she is alone now and will be moving too, to be near us, but in town so she can maintain her independence for as long as she can. Sooooooooo maybe by spring we can have both homes sold and get out of Dodge, as they say.

As for my back, PT continues 2 times a week, think things are better. I actually drove about 50 miles today and no pain in the back of my rt leg. So something is helping. I just have to learn better skills in lifting and bending. Like moving is going to make that easy. hoot.\!!
Found a place today out of the way, like 15 miles from home, a thrift store, to buy good quality books for the store. Got 3 grocery bags crammed full for 10$. Must be close to 100 books. I had a time constrant and lack of bags or would have gotten more. So will be back there later in week and stock up some more. The gal at the book store calls me her apprentice, and she is helping me learn authors that I need to watch for, as there are some types of books that I don't read but are quite popular. Before I leave I will tell her about the thrift store I found.
Well it is about midnight and best get to bed. I have the cusdody of the dog this time, so she is alittle confused, not used to being left alone this much.

I notice everyone seems to have taken a little breather from posting with the holiday. I hope everyone has enjoyed their families and all the little kiddies had a great time. I foresee my next Christmas being very different that this year, for sure!!

Sunday Morning

This is what we saw this morning when we got up, about 6 in. of snow. Good morning to stay home and have maple bacon, eggs, and biscuts { thanks to Pilsbury frozen} That is Molly our dog in the one pic, near the wood pile. The other is out the kitchen window looking at the little porch. Right now looking out my patio windows I see about 50 quail right up to the back door eating grass where it is open, under the porch roof. Molly lays by the patio door and thinks this is her TV. Had a great phone chat with my sis in Mo. this morning then had a nice long E-Mail from my # 1 daughter. Seems I have adopted another daughter so *S* will be my #1. Sorry *A* you will be my #2. Glad you came along when you did.

the little red stove

This is a picture of a little wood stove that AC refinished while we were in Mo. and we got new stove pipe and put it back in the same place that we originally had it.The folks who had the farm before us had stored it in the garage, so we were tickled to find it still there. Can't wait for a nice fire. It is in one end of the second bedroom. Coozy

My Rock

As I stood at my kitchen sink this morning, I looked at the rock on the window sill. It has been there for about 2+years now. It is a special rock. It is brown, looks like sandstone with lots of pits and craters in it. It is about 2 inches across. When I look at it I am reminded of where and how I got it. We had a family reunion at my sisters home, she was living in a cute little log cabin in the middle of the Ozark hills, with a little creek running along the bluff just behind the house. My older brother Jim and I were walking along the creek, looking for "stuff" and talking. This is a good memory of my brother and he picked up this rock and said"here, you need a little peice of Mo. to take back to Nv. with you" so I put it in my suitcase and home it came. So now when I look out my window I glance down and see this little rock and think of him, as I know he is looking down and thinking of all of us. Thanks Jim.

Got Him

Well from Sat nite to Tue, and he was caught. The word at work is that he had a new girlfriend and her parents recognized him from the show and called it in. Just the break they were waiting for. Now they have him for new armed robbery crimes caught on video camera, that he did while he was out so he won't be out of prison for ALOT of years. What a shame huh? A life wasted. On the home front, we got our first snow on Mon. just enough to cover the ground on the valley floor, but now that the sky is clear today the foothills and the mountains around us are beautiful and white. Our snow melted off by the next morning down here. Also to let folks know it looks like 2006 will be the year for us to make our move to Mo. Will post more about that later. Going to start some physical therapy Fri. for my back and hip. Still waiting on a call back about the MRI. Feeling much better at the moment though, so working as usual. I think you can click on the clipping here and get a larger view to read.

The Shirt

There is a little story behind this shirt. My big sister sent it to me. You see she went shopping and saw it. She thought that someone made this pretty shirt just for me and hubby AC. Get it? Bless her heart, I don't think she ever heard of the band. What band? So I love it. I wore it to work Thurs, just for fun, and the only part that anyone could see under my lab jacket was the Thunderbolt and a little of the 2 inside letters, but THEY all knew. I got responses from inmates like "Rock On", "Alright, cool", and even an inappropriate "Hot Mama" LOL. Of course good ole Pat egged them on. So we had a fun nite at work. Gotta have a little fun and it is good to make the guys laugh. Thanks Marge.

Thanks

Someone posted the things she was thankful for and I wanted to add my list.
We are usually mindful of the usual things like our family, our health, ect. But I wanted to think of the more obscure things that we take for granted to say that I am thankful for.

I am thankful for my eyes, that I can see all the wonderful things of nature, the sky, the sunshine, the clouds, the birds, and animals.

I am thankful for my ears, that I can hear voices of people I love, that I can hear the music I love.

I am thankful for my strong hands, that I can earn a living, pet the dog, stroke my husbands face.

I am thankful for my strongs legs, even when I say I hate my thighs, I am thankful for them as they allow me to go where I want to go.

I am thankful most of all for my mind, {such as it is}, as I get older I realize that it is harder to remember things, yet our minds are so full of all our memories. And the ability to continue to learn new things no matter how old we are. That is the really amazing part.

As we celebrate a Thanksgiving Day, I hope we all take a few min. to forget the turkey and pumpkin pie and just be peaceful and give our own private thank you for the true riches in our lives.

Have I become my Mother?

As I stood holding onto the kitchen stove to keep my balance, while I heated a hot pack in the microwave, glanced up at a mirror over the dining room table and thought I saw my mother looking back at me. With fatigue and pain on my face I could see her plain as day. God I hate that. My sisters and I have always joked about who looked the most like her, and of course no one wants to admit that we all do at times. But today I saw it for the first time in myself. You see I did something to my back yesterday, I think it is more than a twik. I had seen an orthopedic on Tue due to hip pain, but it wasn't exactly hip, not as in the hip joint but in front on the pelvic bone, has been hurting since my trip to Mo. in Oct. She thought it was bursitis and put me on an anti inflamatory to take twice a day. Well by Thurs I had no pain so was doing what ever I wanted, which was cutting dead plants from the flower bed. I had cut one garbage can full and was starting on the second when I bent over and got a sudden pain in the lower back and could barely stand up. I waited a few min but it didn't go away, so I made it into the house and have been in bed most of the time. Called the dr. today and AC went after more meds for me. Now my nitestand looks like my mothers, with all the bottles of pills. I have Vicodan for pain, Soma for muscle relaxer, and Cataflam for anti inflamitory. Geez and I don't take much more than tylenol. So here I am. This chair at the computer feels so so but think I have had enough of it. Got an apt. for Tue to see Dr. again. Maybe I can get a catscan out of her and see what is really going on with the low back and hips. See I am my mothers daughter after all. OR maybe I am a little high on all these drugs.

Must be the full moon

I have noticed several people mentioning that they have been a funk this past week. Do you think it might be a pre-full moon thing? I just realize that I have been feeling that way too. Actually told my boss last week that the management at work sucks. Hows that for balls. But I feel much better, not that the management still doesn't suck. I have been so mad about the job lately I was going to blast a post about it but didn't. They have moved out central pharmacy clear across the state and our supplies will be shipped UPS. Great. It may actuallybe better than what we have now. An incompetent pharmicist that can't keep up and we are always 3 to 4 weeks behind on getting our meds. and we can only order a month supply at a time. Well gee. the scrip runs out sometimes before she can fill it. Then our medical director, who is chicken liver to walk across the prison yard, puts a cap on the floor stock we can have on hand. So it makes us work in an unethical way, juggling meds, borrowing from one to another and hoarding meds if some are discontinues or IM leaves us. Just like women to try to fix and patch things you know. Instead of just saying we don't have it, file a greivance, but we don't want to see people without their meds so we cont. to juggle. Its really crap, and I can't leave soon enough. So there, that is my plan, to just get out of it all. Now I really do feel better. Next post will be a very positive upbeat one.

new slippers

AC got me new slippers, I think to just agrevate the dog. As you can see she loves them. Now if she doesn't trip me up. She loves my pink fuzzy slippers and it is a game every morning for her to pounce on them and take one off my foot and run around the house with it. I am having trouble with them though, I can't tell lefty from righty.

The passing of Lt.Col. Brown

Well its over for him. My brother in law passed away last nite. Everything went down hill really fast. I didn't think it would be this soon though. But we all feel it is a blessing that he went quickly. When there is no quality of life then it is time. My sister in law said this morning to not feel sad for her, but I know it will be a huge hole in her life, after 62 years of marriage. But she is a tough little cookie of Polish disent and like her mother before her she will just pull up herself up and handle things that need done and move on. So here is a salute today on Veterans Day to a retired military man who is gone for now.

My story of Highway 50

If you will scan down and start with the first picture and work backward it will be in the order I intended. Guess I need to learn how to put the pictures together at one entry but couldn't figure that out. Sorry. You will get the gist.

Sand Mountain

Another feature on Highway 50 is this huge sand dune, called Sand Mountain. No one really knows the origin of this pile of sand other than maybe pushed up here by some glacier many years ago. People come here to ride up and down on their dune buggies. From the highway they look like ants. You can make out some of the campers in the pictures.

So that is the end of my story of Highway 50. Ya gotta see it at least once. Anyone else been there?

The shoe tree

Somewhere out on highway 50, is this unusual tree that grows shoes. I think you can click on it to get a better view. Over the years it has grown more and more shoes and boots. I understand that from time to time people pick a pair if they are in need. This was the first time for me to see it in its fall colors.

from my windshield

Highway 50, The lonliest highway in Nevada

I can't tell you how many times I have traveled this road. It runs from the Utah boarder to California. The most of it is really lonley, no towns, just sesert and sage brush. Also no rest stops. So you need to consume very little fluid before heading across. Also there is no radio reception out there. You can drive for 30 min. and not see another car.

Update

Wanted to share what has happened with my brother in law. We sent him to the hospital a week ago Fri. and by Wed we had him placed in a nursing home. He has gone down hill very quickly. Dr. ordered hospice to be involved with his care. Sister in Law is still running herself ragged trying to manage his care yet. So we are there for her support to see her thru this time. She has told them there are to be no heroic measures for him. He had a seizure last nite, out of the blue, and now today, is pretty much out of it and not eating and not being gotten up. So it is just a matter of time. As the Dr. said he is on the fast track to heaven.

Busy Week

So glad its Friday, and payday Friday at that. What a week. On Wed we put the bro. in law into a nursing home. Only thing to do at this point. He really doesn't know us now and I expect his cond to just go down hill now. He is on the fast track to heaven.

Been cold and windy in my part of the world. Snow up on the mountains west of us.

Took posession of a new vehicle today. A Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Hope we get the good milage they promised. Very nice and seems funny to put it in gear and you start off and no engine running. Guess it kicks on and off as needed, to keep the battery pack charged and for more power as needed. Has lots of zip.

Hey I miss Heather, did you change your blog again? If so leave a message here for me to find you.

Busy at work, job security. Its late so will hit the hay. Everyone have a good weekend. dc

The Master Plan

One of my most favorite people told me something the other day that just gave me goosebumps.
I told her to thank her friend for being there for her and for being such a really good friend. The friend told her that its just the Master Plan, that it was just ment to be. Isn't that awesome? I believe that things happen for a reason and we mortals usually don't know why and its not always what we want at the time. But there is a reason and there are no accidents or coincidences. But I will always remember the Master Plan. Thank you Miss A. I understand you are becoming a virgin blogger. Welcome on board.

Another family crisis

Last nite, my brother in law, who has alzheimers, sort of wigged out. At least he got worse than usual. I think I have mentioned before he is 84 and wife is 82 and weighs about 95 #. He had a case of wondering all afternoon, then in the evening he locked one of their little dogs in the car in the garage and forgot about it. B. spent 20 min. frantically looking for her dog. Then later he grabed her by the wrists and she had trouble breaking away and had to threaten him with a cooking pot to the head if he didn't get away, right after that she went into the garage to get something,{it is attached to house and extra frig and freezer are there}. He immediately shut the door and locked it. Lucky there is a phone in the garage and she called my hubby to come over. They ended up calling the sherif dept. and they came out, {fire truck, ambulance, and a couple sherif cars} Anyway he was taken to the hosp for evaluation and we spent part of today out checking out nursing homes. Its time. She has done all she can, she has waited on this man for 62 years hand and foot. It will be hard on her to see him in a nursing home but she will be able to sleep in peace at nite. So that is the newest problem. Oh, the ER Dr. asked my hubby if he was out drumming up business, he was the same one that took care of me on Wed. nite.

I am feeling much better. Had a headach all day yesterday, not like me. But the sinus thing is worse now that I am back from trip to Mo. Cooler here now. Nice to have a fire going.

Don't forget to set your clocks back!!

8 hr in ER

What a nite,.... Wed nite at work about 10PM I started feeling dizzy so when it didn't go away I say down on a stool for a while, it seemed to get worse, so checked my blood sugar, and it was OK. I was orienting this new nurse and I told her I thought I better lay down. so I pushed myself {on the stool} out into the hall way and she put a guerney that was there into the conference room and I laid on it. Then I started feeling nauseated and started shaking. So they got the nurse from the infirmiry to come up{bless her heart}she was great. At first was going to call hubby and get me to the gate house to go home but it seemed worse and I was sure I would pass out so she decided to call the ambulance instead. So I got to ride on the golf cart on the guerney{that we use for the inmates} Thank god it was in the night, and no inmates around. Anyway went to ER. They did lab, EKG, and even a CTscan of my head. Of course they didn't find anything abnormal in all this. Gave me some phenergan by IV. Took a couple hrs for the shaking to stop and the dizziness. Kept me for observation till 6;30 in AM and I went home. Still not sure what caused it except it was a reaction of some kind. Sort of a vagal vasal syncopal episode. Sort of what people have when they see blood and pass out. May have been triggered by an indocin I took about 45 min. before this happened. Have taken one twice while in Mo. for this burning pain that I have been getting in a hip. I had planned to work an extra 4 hrs. that nite and hip was kicking up so I took one. Naughty nurse. DON"T take meds that are not prescribed for you. Indocin is an anti gout, anti inflamatory type med. Only problem with it is that it can cause nausea on an empty stomach and other problems if taken to often or for to long. Hubby takes it for a gouty ankle that flares up from time to time, and that is why I had it with us in Mo. Anyway I was pretty whiped out yesterday, Went to bed early and slept 11 hrs last nite. Feel OK today so will go to work. Oh, my medical officer, Pat that I talk about. came to the hospital at midnight and talked her way in to be with hubby and me. They asked her if she was family or friend, and she said"which one do I have to be to get in there?" Thats my Pat! She said she would have told them she was my sister if she had to. So she finally got to my hubby. He told me later that he knows why I like her so much. She is a pistle. Well enough for now. I really don't like to read about alot of ailments but wanted to share this little experience. Now I will see how my new insurance pays. Will follow up with my Dr. on Mon. Maybe find out what is going on with my hip and let him prescribe something for ME> Ha Ha. I really hate to take medicine. Now I know why.

More Synchrinisity

I am happy to report that I am the owner of my store now. When we returned home from our 3 wk. stay in Mo. the warrenty deed was in our mail. Yea!! Also the new roof is being done this week. So I have a start.

Yesterday I went to the grocery store to restock the empty refrig. and there was a lady in the parking lot. She had a dog in her car very similar to mine so being the friendly person I am, I spoke to her about her dog. She ended up getting the dog out of the car to meet me and we chatted for awhile. Found out she just opened a used book store just 15 mi. so of me about 6 mo ago and had very positive things to say about it. She gave me her card and invited me to come look around and seemed very willing to share her experience with me. Now how is that for syncrinisity? To meet a total stranger and find something in common. I seem to be finding this happening alot in my life lately or I am just more in tune to it. I think we should all pay attention to these things. Its really cool.

More about my store, while in Mo. I got some insurance set up. Mostly to just cover me for liability in case some little theif broke in and cut his foot on the glass. Anyway the ins. agent told me that he knows of several small book stores in the general area, and they seem to be doing very well. In talking to a few local folks in this little town, I got very positive feelings about it also. So I am excited and have taught a couple family members how to make a good deal on buying good nearly new books at yard sales for me. ha ha. Only the good deals. I went to one while there and offered 10$ for a whole tub of books and when I got home had 93 books. At least I won't have to haul them like the boxes I have packed up here. Next trip back will plan to start tearing out windows to get ready to reside the building next summer. Only going to have windows on the front and will replace the ones there with new standard vynal windows and I want to put shutter on each side of them. Also want to look into an awning over the door. Brother is putting in a new front door for me this fall yet. Then we can start on the inside stuff. Still have plenty of time to get it all done. Just a pay as I go deal so when I start I will only have my utilities and insurance to pay out. Well enough for now.

Oh, one last thing. I believe in the power of positive thinking, so could everyone please send some love and positive thinking along to my daughter, If you are a regular reader of this family of bloggers you will know who I mean. Things are getting real tough for her right now and she needs all the love and support out there to get thru. Thanks so much. dc

I'M BAAACK!!

Honey, I'm Home!!!

Good to be home, safe and sound. Had a great trip home, perfect weather, cool and cloudy the first day then the second day coming thru Colorado was gorgeous!! The quaken aspen have mostly finished with their show, but the cotton woods along the rivers were wonderful. Took alot of pictures, will post them later. Then today, day 3 was very nice, high of 70 and clear.Drove the lonliest road in Nv. and have pictures to prove it. Will show them later.
I miss our little farm so much, this seems like a pseudo life here now. when we walk into our farm house door we are HOME. But it will all come in good time, Gosh I have so much to talk about, trying to catch up reading everyones blogs for the past 3 weeks, I guess I won't comment on them but know that I have read each one and enjoyed them every one. So with the time change for me, I will be alittle confused for a few days. my clock says almost 8 pm but in Mo. it is almost 10pm and bed time. Have to go back to work tomorrow. Ugg. Well bye for tonite. Have alot of ideas for future blogs and a book review. Yes, I read in Mo. only 2 tv channels from the rabbit ears, and I think most of the shows stink anyway. dc
